Crown 56003151 Power Antenna

Hi Guys, I need to replace the power antenna unit on my '88 TA for a couple of reasons (broken mast, motor keeps running). After searching around several people said the Crown antenna works with just changing the cable to the original and lengthening the wires. I'm comparing the two assemblies and I see the mounting tabs are 180 degrees out from each other. Will this bolt up like this or do I have to mod something to make it work? Thanks for any info., RonM.

You could fix up your old unit by installing a steel cable in lieu of the brittle plastic cable. Do a search and you will find some good threads. I don't know much about the crown replacement, although I seem to remember it was for a Jeep Cherokee. It looks very similar though.

Here is a thread on turbotransam.com about using the Crown replacement.

There are also some pics at the end of this thread comparing stock to the Crown unit.

Re: Crown 56003151 Power Antenna

Thanks for the info. guys, but I still have an antenna assembly with the mounting tab for the mounting bracket rotated 180 degrees from the original. Can the cylinder that contains the mast and the mounting tab be rotated 180 degrees? If it can, then it would match the original. The antenna cable also mounts to this cylinder and it is also 180 degrees out from the original. I don't want to splice into the wiring until I'm sure the assembly will work. Thanks again for any info., RonM.

Re: Crown 56003151 Power Antenna

Has anyone found an extension cable that would connect to the crown antenna that will extend it to the stereo ? I'm in the process of retrofitting a power antenna into a car that didn't have a power antenna. So I have no factory cable to use and swap in place. I bought a Crown antenna but not sure what type of cable attaches to it.

Here's what I did, I used 2 - 1/2" pipe straps bolted to the flange on the crown mast allowing me to basically move the mount to the opposite side. Then a factory mount attached to that. Bolted right in no problem.

I am currently in the process of rounding up a few parts and this Crown replacement antenna to replace my missing power antenna. This mod is a nice trick to save tearing down a new part to make it fit correctly.

Re: Crown 56003151 Power Antenna

You rotate the cad plated mast and tube assembly 180 degrees. That puts the antenna connector facing toward the front of the car and the mounting bracket on the cad plated mast and tube assembly on the other side like the OEM GM power antenna so it matches up with the mounting bracket that attaches the power antenna to the car's body.
