Speakers "popping"...help!

I've been grappling with putting a GTA stereo in my car for some time now. I finally managed to get ahold of those nifty connectors that plug into them, and as some of you have guessed, the "lock" went on. Since I don't have SW controlls, I can't unlock it. So, I went and got a wiring harness from good ol' Wal-Mart, and reconnected my old deck. Now, I've noticed that whenever I turn the volume up to a listenable level, the speakers make a funny pop on bass hits. These are only the speakers that are connected to my amp. What could it be? The connection is RCA so I couldn't have the ground switched for the signal. Thanks.

But that's the funny thing...there isn't. I have bass boost turned OFF on my deck and amp, and the bass level on the amp is 2 or 3 out of 5. This is happening on non-bassy songs, as well. It will be on a bass hit, but the hit shouldn't have been hard enough to make them trip up.

Check the speaker wires...you may have the leads reversed which is causing an inverted phase.

Definately check and re-check your speaker connections. Just because the colors match dosen't mean that they belong together. I'm not saying you did this, but it is a mistake many people make if they are in a hurry.

i had a 10 inch jl that started popping and it turned out to be a blown voice coil. if it sounds like a knocking on the cone, that could be what it is.

Thanks, RGZ, but there are a total of 4 speakers doing this. I simply refuse to believe that all of them got blown at once, or even close together. And pukka, these are RCA hookups. Impossible to get backwards, I believe. Could be a bad connection or two, I suppose. I'll check tomorrow. Thanks to all

AH, I knew this problem sounded familiar. What I have seen in the past, people take a stock radio that does not have pre amp outputs, and splice into an RCA jack. When they plug that RCA into the Amp, it sounds OK at low level, but when you turn it up it completely goes to $hit. If this is what happened......you need an RCA converter. It changes your outputs to pre amp, allowing you to hook a stock radio like the one you have into an amp with RCA inputs. Also, if the amp has inputs for regular speaker wire (screw down type) use those instead and save yourself 15$ on a converter.

Trust me on this one, you have to have an RCA converter to run RCA jacks to an amp from a radio that does not have pre amp outputs. I wouldn't lie!

RGZ, there is a slight problem. This deck isn't the stock one, it is another of mine, that DOES HAVE preamp outputs. They are connected to my amp's preamp inputs. This system has not changed in it's design at all, I have just rewired the deck and am having speaker poppage. Thank you.
