opinions on factory B-pillar subs or stay 6x9?

my 87 Trans Am was OK sounding when I used to drive it and thought it needs upgraded after owning a 99 Trans am with Monsoon and amp and 10" sub - I know thyats not exotic but worked good IMO - now I want better in my 87 and going to add amp and 10" sub was wondering if the OE B pillar subs were worth adding or not? dont want tpopo exotic - Its hard to justify alot on something that's not a DD and have other cars that need systems too like these

or is there something better like a 6.5 sub In that location?

I installed 8” subs in the sail panels on my previous TA. I thought they sounded good. Only issue was the black door jamb vents would vibrate. I posted some pics in this thread:

I’ve never heard the factory b-pillar subs w/4x6s so I can’t specifically comment on them. However, if you’re going to be running a 10” sub I doubt you would hear the 6-6.5” subs – unless you ran a dedicated bandpass crossover and amp on them (say from 120-50hz and the 10” from 50hz down). I’ve done something like that in the past with 10s and 15s, but it really wasn’t that much “better” than just the 15’s and definitely not worth the money.

I used to install car audio on the side for many years and one of the best sounding “budget” systems I installed in a 3rd gen was using 8” KEF home speaker drivers and tweeters in the sail panels. While most wouldn’t consider them budget speakers, he didn’t want subs taking up any cargo area, so the total spend was less than most spend on 6x9s and a dedicated sub amp and subs.

The twin sub drivers are like 4.5". Very small. They do add low bass notes, but are not worth the trade-off in the rest of the spectrum IMO, as you get 4 4x6 speakers (dash and quarters) with this system, and mids are severely lacking. I'd stick with the 6x9s and a larger sub somewhere else.

I replaced the foam edge on my original UQ7 drivers. The photos are in my build thread (link in my sig. below) if you've never seen them.

thank both of you for educating me kind of what I was thinking 4.5 subs? giggle and 4x6 well also a giggle DynoDave I had read that thread about re-conning I think what ill do is the dash 4x6 6x9 in B-pillars and a 10" sub in back PLUS a 6x5 mids in the front kicks
the 99 Trans am I had added a 10" sub box and was more than enough sound & thump for me
BadSs - can you elaborate on this "installed in a 3rd gen was using 8” KEF home speaker drivers and tweeters in the sail panels"?
kind if greek to me
thank you both

I ordered replacement 8” woofers with point source tweeters (4ohm, all in one) for KEF C35 home speakers and installed them in the sail panels (using self-built custom crossover). This was around 1990 and before the internet took off. So you had to be in good with a business that did warranty work on speakers in order to get the replacements – either that or you bought the complete speaker (usually way too costly).

There are places now like PartsExpress and Madisound that sell exceptional sounding raw (separate "replacement") drivers like ScanSpeak, Seas, Vifa, SB Acoustics, and Eton (to name a few) at a fraction of the cost compared to the higher end car speakers. If you’re interested in doing a “do-it-yourself” car audio project, let me know your budget and I’ll suggest the best combo for the money.

hey everybody i've been looking for speakers to replace my blown factory sets in my 82'. i'm not an audiophile so i dont know much. after weeks of looking i think i found a set of 6x9s i like for the back can anybody give me their opinion on them? Also is it a problem if i'm using them with my stock head unit and no amp?
