The Dash is the best place. You could meter it from the sub if you wanted too but that's cheating.

I would have it metered from the front seat. If you get it metered from the dash you have the front speakers right there and it will be alot louder than it is. I think it should be metered from where YOU will hear it and see what the difference is. Again this is my opinion and how I am going to have mine done.

And your point is?

IIRC, that one guy (GranPrix?) and I talked about it. I've had mine in an SPL contest and it's put on the windshield, either 2" from the dash and 6" from the "A" pillar, or 6" from the dash and 2" from the "A" pillar.

I don't exactly remember which one it is. It would make sense that it's the 6" from the dash/2" from the "A" pillar. But like I said, I don't remember.

All I do know is that one of those two positions is the IASCA location.

You could meter it anywhere in the car but the placement of choice is the dash. IDBL's Guide Lines is 4inches from the dash which you can compare your testing with everyone elses. By placing the mic somewhere else would raise or lower your SPL so your SPL measurments wouldn't be on the same level as everyone else(like measuring from the sub.......cheating). And by the mic always being in the same spot will allow your next SPL run to be consistent with the first one. The dash speakers would have very, very little effect on your SPL.

I'd get it metered from about 4 feet to the right of you outside the car, so you can see just how much you are annoying the guy next to you listing to classical.

The mic should be (someone correct me if I'm wrong, it's been about 2 years since I judged RTA and don't have a rule book handy) 4" off the dash and 6" from the passangers side a-piller, and the mic should be a high spl mic rather than the SQ mic that is used for RTA scoring.
Here it is. I used the search and found it. I guess he used to do this stuff.

So to me, if you wanna have it measured, do it right. That way you can truely say what your real SPL is instead of saying "Well I hit 140dB, but that was with the mic in the center of the rear glass" or anything else like that.

I totally agree. I hadn't heard the 6" from from pillar tho. anyway if Carl said it I'd talk his word for it. And AJ hey buddy!

Would you belive that I can not find my IASCA rule book?

Mike or Jim should be able to verify those numbers for me, but I'm pretty sure they were right. Judges should have a template to line it up (looks like a small speed square with a hole in the corner for the mic)

This would at least give you a measurement that you could compare to others who have done legal testing as well as be accurate each time you re-test.

Hope that helps...
