Rear Speakers for a Convertible?

Hello. I just picked up a 1989 Convertible for my wife. It has been several years since I owned an F-body and it was not a convertible. Anyway the car is very low mileage and 100% original. I want to keep the entire wire harness complete and uncut.

What size are the rear speakers in the convertible? I know the hatchbacks were 6X9’s. I have one of the 45 watt GM size Pioneer head units installed. Any speaker recommendations? I will not be adding an external amp or subwoofer. All help and advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
Scott

I think the stock opening is only big enough for a 4*6? its been a while, I had a custome setup done for mine about 4yrs ago. I wanted a 6*9 and they said it probally would not fit. This doesnt mean you cant modify it yourself though. Take it too a local shop and tell them what you want see what they can do for you. that would be my advice.

in my 91 it takes 5.25. i tried doing the 6x9's i have a really good pair of Cerwin vegas that were from my old car, i tried and tried, but there is NO WAY of putting 6x9's in the rear(of course the vegas have a really huge magnet) This topic was discussed a few months ago, i believe one guy was able to do it..but the panels stuck out aobut an inch.
what i may do is get 5.25 components or mayb 6.5" components and try to put them back there, casue as is...5.25 cant handle much bass at all, and that is with good speakers i put in. well good luck...steve

I'm the guy that had 6x9s in a few months ago. It wa s royal PITA getting then wedged in there and i still ended up w/ the trim pushed in an inch, lol. When i had the trim off again running wiring for the amp i didn't even pretend to put the 6x9s back in, wasn't worth it.
You can easily get a 6.5" speaker on the factory plate, you just need to drill new screw holes, and if you feel like it, cut the center hole larger. You'll see what i mean once you have the trim off, basically, the speakers are mounted to plastic plates that are mounted by studs from the speaker grilles.

i put 6x9's in my 91rs cnvt with not problem or mod. i didn't have any speakers in there when i bought the car, and since my 89 rs has the 6x9's in the back, i just assumed that the convertible had the same.

I'll have to try to find a pair and get them in asap. Do you have the specs for them. Like the mounting depth etc??

6.5s should go in no problem. That is what I put in my car and they look like the same size as the stock ones.

Do they fit behind the stock speaker grill? Also what holds the grill on? I started working on removing them but I was afraid that I may break them.

Thanks,

Once you have the rear side panels off, getting the speakers out is easy. There are 4 studs that come out the back from the speaker grille that have buts holding the speaker plate one. Once you have the speaker plate off, you just unscrew the speaker.
Like i said above, putting a 6.5" speaker on the plate is cake, all you need is new screw holes. I suppose if you had a shallow enough 6x9 you could get it in there, but the cerwin vega 6x9s i had (which were relatively shallow) did not even remotely fit correctly in there no matter how i positioned them and pushed the panels out noticeably.

Re: Rear Speakers for a Convertible?

I think you have to remove the whole panel that it mounts to and it has something holding it on from the rear. As well as I remember.
