How good are the Pioneer speakers???
I have Pioneer 4x6's up front (not sure of the wattage) and Pioneer 220 watt 6x9's in the back. Right now it sounds okay at low levels, but once you turn it up it gets very distorted. Every time any kind of bass tries to come in it sounds like it's throwing up. I figure this is mainly because I have a JVC head unit and no amp installed. I do have a Kenwood amp which I have not installed. I do not plan on buying subs. So my question is, with the amp installed, do these speakers have potential? Will it sound good, or do I need to invest in some new speakers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
Thoe type of speakers are usually meant for highs and really for any bass, do u have and bass gauges on ur head unit, maybe turn the bass down so u can turn the speakers up a lil more.

Yeah, it does have bass control, but I like to listen to hip hop and rap, so I need bass. Could there be something loose inside the speakers that is causing the buzzing/distortion when it hits? How about with the amp, will that help the bass a lot? Thanks for the reply.

I have the Pioneer Premier 6x9s in my Camaro. I hate em. I am goin to get a set of Infinity 6x9s when i get the Formula im lookin to buy. If you listen to rap then id advise getting some better 6x9s. ThePioneers are ood for stock replacements but thats about it.

I have a set of the 4 way Pioneers in the back. They actually have potential to be very good. However:
1. They need more power than that crap head unit you have. Get a smal 2 channel amp or a head unit with a MOSFET amp in it. Like a Pioneer DEH P4300.
2. There is also a baffle behind the speaker that is held together with metal staples that rattle on the sheet metal when you have alot of bass. Order a pair of 10" square sheets of Dynomat from Crutchfied and do the following:
Remove the sail panel and remove the speaker. Then Remove the interior piece around the sail panel. This is a pain in the *** and can take a long time if you haven't done it before. Now, you'll see a plate (that the speaker was screwed into) screwed into the sheet metal, the baffle is screwed in behind that. Remove the plate and pull out the baffle. Now, cut a couple of strips of dynomat and line the area where the plate screws in. Take the remaining square of the dynomat and place it on the sheet metal behind where the speaker will go. Screw the plate onto the dynomat and then the speaker onto the plate. Once you've hooked the speaker up, test it. If you had the same problem as me, you'll notice alot of buzz you thought was distortion will have disappeared.
Now, last of all, go get some sort of sub! You'll never get good bass sound out of those 6x9's, no matter how hard they hit. There's not enough air behind speakers to get any decent bass response.

I am running Pioneer 6995 4-ways with a Alpine V-power (50 Watts X 2 RMS) powering them. They sound awesome, to keep the bass tight dont remove the soft boxes behind them. If you want any 6x9 to sound good in a f-body a amp is a must.
I have Pioneer speakers all around in my 86 Z28 and I find the 6X9s awesome, they are three ways running of a Pioneer deck, but the 4x6's are crap...I hate them, any bass at all and they rattle and distort. My recommendation to help you a bit is put the fader about 1/3 to the back and turn the bass up a bit. I here kenwood make really good 4x6's that don't rattle and distort from bass, but any 4x6 is gonna sound crappy with a lot of bass...try components and by an adapter plate to put the tweeters in where the 4x6's are and put the woofer down in your doors...that is what I plan on doin.

I'm almost done installing the amp. The guy at Circuit City suggested filtering the sound for the fronts so that only high frequencies pass through (since 4x6's can't put out decent bass) and to run the rears full range? Does this sound like a good idea? I'll let you guys know how the system sounds with the amp. Thanks again.

1 - the power rating of a speaker basically means nothing at all so ignore it completely
2 - speakers that sound like crap usually do so because the volume control was turned up to high and the signal is being clipped
3 - it is way easier to clip a signal and get distortion when you don't have enough amplifier power
4 - most HU's don't have enough power
5 - most external amplifiers have way more clean power than the average HU
6 - installing a high-pass-filter on your 4x6s is probably a very good idea
7 - running your 6x9s full range may be OK if you don't/can't get a subwoofer
