why did the 4bbl first gens have return lines?
just wondering, i figured you guys would know. ive seen it labeled vent line also, would i be able to run it as a pressured tbi return line, or is it strictly a low pressure return/vent line?

1st gens didn't have return lines. That was a vent line to the vapor or charcoal canister. I would not recommend using it as a return line, because doing so would eliminate the tank vent. If you want a return line, you'll have to add another one.

any ideas of how to go about doing that. where is that canister, i dont think mine has it, what is its function? should i add one if i dont have it.
It's real easy to run a return line, Snuf. but, to do it right, you drop the tank and pull the sending unit assembly. then, either have someone weld a bung or a piece of pipe or a double-ended barbed fitting into it. The, run some rubber line down into the tank on the barbed piece, using a nice stainless clamp (all stainless!) and put the assembly back into the tank, making sure that the return line doesn't "dump" the fuel near the ump inlet sock/filter, as not to suck up air...
Then, outside the tank, just run some 5/16" minimum ID line/rubber/tubing back to the engine compartment as carefully and cleanly as you can, using cable straps where appropriate.
Make sense?

well, the tank is out, cuz i just bought a new tank, and sending unit, straps etc...
i bought the sending unit that went with the 4bbl cars, because it says its got a 3/8s feed line, and a 1/4 vent line. i thought that was the same as the return line. i think im going to do what you said, weld a bung on the tank before i ever put gas in it.

DOn't weld it to the tank itself, weld it into the top of the removable sending unit plate, like where the other lines are plumbed through. you really want to leave the rest of the tank in-tact. Trust me. you don't need to make holes in a new/nice tank but the sending unit assembly is fair game.

good idea, so how would i keep the return line away from the feed then, should i have a stainless, intank return line made, that points away from the feed line etc.. inside the tank.
