Using the "H" word
Not for the 3rd gen, but the 396 in the '57.
I'm considering the Holley 750 cfm 3310S. It's a 4160 model, manual choke. Primary use is track, but do expect to be able to fire it up and drive to work on Fridays with no "issues".
Would convert to 4150 with the conversion kit, add electric choke, quick-change secondary spring kit, secondary spring assortment, dual feed fuel line. About $330 shipped from Summit.
Three questions:
1) What size jets does it come with in the primaries? I looked in www.holley.com and in the Summit tech info, didn't find it. Would like to know so I could order some jets on each side at the same time.
2) Would you add anything to the above list?
3) By the "normal" formulas, the 750 cfm works using a 1.10 factor - should it be bigger for 5800 RPMs? If so, the only vacuum secondary available is the 770 Avenger, more dollars for (what appears to me to be) less carb. The other choice is a #4780 800 CFM DP, which also costs more and I'm not sure I want to do a DP with auto tranny.
I guess it's actually 4 questions. The Summit catalog lists the 3310 as "HLY-0-3310S-P3P". If you punch that into their website search, it gives you a message about needing to call to order because of "special handling procedures". However, "HLY-0-3310S" gives you a normal order screen. What's the "P3P" mean?
Facts and advice appreciated. Not sure I need any opinions, though...

I think you're on the right track, but I'd step up to a bigger carb. It'd a big block....750cfm is average for a daily driven 350. They do make an 850cfm vacuum secondaires.
here is one...but I think there are several.
http://www.holley.com/HiOctn/ProdLin.../0-80531.html.
I say call summit, tell them exactly what features you want (VS, 4150 series, 850cfm, whatever finish you want, etc) and let them feed you a part number.
I'm still not sure what the deal is with the street Avenger series is either. Seems to me to be a gimmick to try and compete with Demon.
I dunno what jets it comes with, but I say just buy a box of #60-100 jets for $35, it'll add up to more than that real quick buying jets individualy.

That's the 502 crate motor carb - $570+. YIKES! I think I'd go Performer RPM q-jet before that. Yes, it's a big-block, but just a baby rat. I doubt it would use 850 CFM even with potential upgrades (none planned).
I'll try to give Summit a call. I hesitate because my only opportunity comes after-hours (west coast), I haven't had the best of luck with the mid-shift types.
I'll check on the box of jets - I didn't know about that.
Any thoughts on the DP? I know guys who use them w/auto, but they've got 454-502's, 5k stall converters, 6500 shift points, 4.56 rear race-only cars. I have 2200 stall, 3.08's, 5500 shift, 3960 lbs going down the track at 5800' elevation.

I was thinking 800 DP vs. 750 VS.
Also it appears the 0-80508S, 750 VS w/electric choke, would work for less money. The Summit paper catalog lists it as "Ford automatic trans. kickdown", but both the Holley and Summit sites have those words on the 0-3310S as well. Difference over the 3310 w/electric choke kit almost pays for the jet kit!

I bought one of the 80508 Holleys at the local Advance Auto parts off the shelf. It was $10 cheaper than Summit plus no shipping. I got mine for my 406. Unless you are really needing every last HP I wouldn't pay the difference for any other carb. From the description you gave, I don't think you could even tell till you got over 5000rpm.

You should think the other way around. If anything keep a smaller CFM with a DP than a VS. VS carbs are alot more forgiving.
I.E. a 750DP vs. an 850VS

5.7, Have you considered an "80770" 770 cfm?
I know a few guys who have used this carb and have had no problems or tunning issues with thier BBC's one of them is in a daily driver that runs 13's. It just seems easyer this way than piecing one togather and advanced auto now stocks them.

The 80770 is an Avenger model. They're a 4160 style (no secondary jet change possible), and over $100 more than the 3310. The adjustable vacuum secondary looks interesting, but springs are cheap and changes easy with the quick-change conversion. The clear fuel bowl sight plugs are cute, but still not worth that kind of money.
Summit is offering a $22 fuel line free this month with the purchase of a silver 3310. Perhaps I can talk them into doing that with the 80508. Advanced Auto isn't in my area, and even if they were, the sales tax would exceed Summit's handling fee and the $10 savings combined.
Jester, I see what you're saying about the CFM of DP vs VS. I was thinking I could two-step the DP off the line, which is really what I want to improve (high RPM power is fine with the q-jet), but a forgiving 750 VS does make sense.
I'll give Summit a call this morning and let you all know what they say. Thanks for your input.

Just got off the phone with Summit. 750 VS is the only viable route. So, ordered 3310S electric choke (aka 80508S), with 4150 conversion kit, quick change secondary spring kit & spring assortment, #64-99 jet assortment kit, dual feed fuel line (free), and Mike Ulrich's "Holley Carb Guide for 4150/60" - $331.60 on my doorstep next week (which is fine, since I won't be on my doorstep until next weekend).

Well, it arrived today (as did I). Unpacked it with great anticipation, hoping to get it installed and try to drive it to work tomorrow morning.
But...
They didn't put in the fuel feed line!
I even asked the person taking the order twice about that line.
I called, it'll be shipped tomorrow, should arrive Monday.
Leaving Friday to see the mom-in-law in Montana, back next Thursday, Mile High Bracket Nationals next Friday. Some tuning time would have been nice. Oh, well...
