Vacume vs. Mech. Secondaries
Vacume vs. Mech. Secondaries
Hey just a question which is better? Ok better question, which is better for my application. its an 83 Camaro, 5-speed, carbed 350, headers, 3inch single all the way. stealth intake, 1.90 cast iron heads, comp 270 cam. gonna change the heads, cam and carb. I really am confused about the carb though. I need an electric choke. Thanks for the help. Jered 1983SS

I like to run mechanical on standard, and vacuum on auto.Usually the way most people decide. So yeah go with mechanicals.

what am I going to gain by going with a mech. secondary? Also what would be a good carb? I have an edelbrock now. I really appreciate the input. Jered 1983SS www.geocities.com/smokntires

you gain nothing really in your case. if its a more race car then machanical is better, vacuum will open the secondaries as fast and the engine will let it, stopping bogs. machinical just forces the secondarys open often causing bogs on lesser power engines, so go vaccum secondaries forsure.

I prefer to run vacuum secondary carbs on the street in anything slower than 12.99. Once you start going really fast the slower opening rate of a vacuum secondary carb can start to hinder perfomance, often not opening fully by the top of 1st gear since the car revs through that gear so quickly.
You can use vacuum secondary with auto or manual. You can use double pumper with auto or manual. There are no hard and fast rules. The one thing you want to avoid with a double pumper is "nailing it" at lower RPMs with your foot to the floor- it won't work nearly as well as a vacuum secondary carb in those circumstances. And that happens alot when driving of the street.

I totaly agree with Damon. Vac secondary is the way to go with any street driven veh. I like to have my secondaries completly closed when im driving down the road, saves gas.

Thanks for the info guys I really apreciate it. I am will a vacume carb be ok when I rework the motor? I am currently amassing better heads, and a really stout cam. Should be good for mid 12's if I do my part (the driving) right. The car is still going to be street car just with a lot of attitude. Any suggestions on carb? I dont think the current edelbrock 600 will be up to it. Thanks Jered

Theoratically a VS is fine up to 12's or whatever. But in my personal experience it just doesn't work that way. With steep gears and/or a manual they just don't keep up, and bog out every shift no matter how much you play with secondary springs. Was REALLY annoying on my 3.73/T5 car, and that only ran 15's at the time.
Plus I had a complex about now knowing exactly when/long they were taking to open, or that they were opening far enough. Now, given the choice, I say go manual secondaries on anything with a manual, or auto with over 3.73 gears, street driven or not. Hell..I have a Dominator on my street driven car

thanks everyone for the great response, I have a feeling that the carb may be whats causing the car the way it is, kinda slow. I think I have a good combo now, with a better one on the way. She just lacks the acceleration I think is waiting there. Any suggestions for a carb with manual secondaries? I like the specs on the road demon. Thanks again it really helps. Jered
