removing my CFI system

Hey eveyone,

I would like to dump out the CFI system that I have in my 82 camaro, what is the best bang for the buck on an intake & carb. Also, am I going to have to do anything because of the computer?

Thanks!

Ben

cfi

You'll need a vacuum-advance distributor to replace your electronic-advance one, in addition to the carb & intake. Summit has good deals on the carb & intake combos, and I think they come with gaskets and everything, too. Just get the Holley 1850S (which is 600cfm) and a Performer intake, that should only set you back about $300 or so I think, and should be plenty for the 305. Then just get a rebuilt vacuum advance distributor from Napa and you're good to go.

Good Luck

Dave

Intakes

Weiand Stealth will flow more in the upper RPM range, more like 2500-6500 (comparable to a Performer RPM), while the Performer will flow from 1000-6000. All that will happen if you bolt on a Stealth is you'll lose a little torque down low, and a CFI 305 isn't going to breathe real well past 5000 with stock heads and cam. If you're going to be sticking more stuff in the motor like a cam, headers, exhaust, and heads, DEFINITLY go for the Stealth. But for just swapping over to a carb, I'd say a Performer would be your best option. I've known a lot of people that have had them, and for the modney, they're a great intake, but hey, it's your car.

Good Luck

Dave

EGR

I'd go ahead and get a non-EGR. And if you're getting a Holley carb, make sure to get a Performer with a Holley pattern, not a spread-bore!! The spread-bore will accept a Q-Jet, and you'll need an adapter plate to make the Holley fit. What are you doing for mods on the car after that??

I'm not really sure what to do next, besides exhaust and headers what would you recommend?

mods

Yeah, I'd definitly do headers and exhaust next. You'll notice a huge difference.

As long as it has dual bolt patterns a spread bore manifold will work for holley carbs. Just stay away from the QJET specific manifols that only have one bolt pattern. Seconldy change your TV cable to a stock carbed one or use a universale adjustable on from B&M , the Crossfire cable is a little too short .

The Weiand Action+ is a little better manifold than the Performer. The GMPP dual-plane is also a good piece. If you can find a crate motor take-off (which is what I have), it may even cost you less than either of the others.

All of those manifolds (Performer, Action+, GMPP) have the dual pattern - spread-bore or square-bore mounting, and EGR or non-EGR versions (except the GMPP - use block-off plate if no EGR). The Stealth is square-bore, non-EGR only.
