my car bogs big time
i have an 83 z28 camaro with an lg4 305 v8 with the folowing mods.
Carter AFB competition series carb
weihin stealth intake
hooker competition headers
mild crane cam
new cap, roter, plugs and wires
new alternater
new electric feul pump
if you put the car in park and punch the gas it will rev all the way to 4000rpm and sit there and bog for a couple seconds at that rpm then clean out and rev up to around 6K so that was my first sine that it was running like crap cause of the carb runnign way to rich or to lean
if you put it in drive iand put it to the floor it bogs big time and doesnt want to go above 4k the only way i can get it to go above 4 k is if i manualy shift it into first gear and put it to the floor and even then u can feel it bog big time and slowely take off and eventualy rev to 6k but ounce i shift it to 2nd gear it bogs right back doun and doesnt want to go above 4k.
the car sat a whole year before i took it out and i just bought it so i dont no what it was like when i first got it and most of the year it sat was durring the winter the whole winter to be exact so im thinking maybe the carb gumbed up and the bogging seems to get worse as the engine gets hotter or the longer i drive it.
how can i go about tryign to tune my carb my self from the front of the car i see 2 jets that i can eather tighten or loosen to ajust it a left one and a right one wich jey os for what and how do i tackle trying to tune it my self.

hmm
im not shure what size it is how would i go about finding that out ?
visualy it doesnt look to huge to me it prolly like a 600 or a 650
are there serial numbers soem ware on it that i can give you guys and you will be able to tell me what one o have.
also i had a ? what does the letters AFB stand for on this carb

Eliminating other possibilities first...
Do you still have the stock quadrajet? If so (if you don't, try and pick one up from a junkyard from a 305 cheap.... as this will eliminate other possibilities that might cost you more by guessing), put it on the motor, and see if the bogging goes away throughout the entire RPM band when you floor it....
If the bog goes away, then you're Carter is way too big (probably a 750). If the bog remains, it's either idle mixture, or more than likely a vacuum leak. Vacuum leaks occur even with a good idle, sometimes they need a load to become prevalent.....

Casting Numbers.....
I have an older Carter 750 AFB in my garage that I'm not using. Give me you're casting numbers on the primary flap, as well as on the top of the air horn. There's also a set of numbers on the bottom of the CARB. Lemme know if you have a '7' somewhere....

hmm
how would i test it for a vaxume leak i herd something about spraying something flamable around the vent lines and around the carb base and listen for it to rev up or soemthing like that,
im guess that one of my probs would be maybe is that the guy who put the carb on the car istead of hooking the line from the carb that is suposed to go to the charcole box inlet ware it ses CARB instead he put a short piece of hose on the carb and srewed a screw into it would this be my problem or is that fine.

Carburetors.....
Carburetors suck air in, and even if you disconnect all of you're vacuum lines (on the CARB), you won't have a vacuum leak (the car will run terrible, and you'll need to adjust it, but you won't have a leak).....
Vacuum leaks occur ONLY by where the CARB is bolted on, and throughout the intake manifold. All that the CARB does is mix fuel with air....
Spray some CARB cleaner with the engine running around the base of the CARB, and by the intake manifold bolts.... if the engine speeds up, there's you're leak.
I still think she's getting too much fuel though. I once (in despiration for a ride) put a 750 Carter on a 305 as well. With a vacuum reading gauge, I set the idle mixture.... and the gauge read 19psi, which is a very very good reading. But aside from the reading, and with no vacuum leaks whatsoever, the car had the EXACT same symptoms as you're describing!
Between the electric fuel pump, and the Carter CARB.... that little 305 of your's is begging for more air (and cubes)...
Don't forget to check you're spark plugs as well, that's another good way to see if you're running too rich.

I don't think so bro....
Too small of a gap really isn't an issue bro. The correct CARB for the application will compensate for any loss of spark in the combustion chamber....
Even if you re-gap them, and add (as I did when I installed a Carter 750 on a 305 chevy) a MSD ignition box, you'll still have hesitation, and bogging.
Spark plugs usually come gapped correctly from any auto parts store, and even if their a 'little' off, it's not enough to make the car perform like that....
The CARB sounds too big, but again this is only after you eliminated the vacuum leakage issue. If there's no vacuum leak, and the vacuum gauge reads between 14 - 20 psi, and you're timing is on the money, and you're fuel pressure is good.... then the problem resides somewhere in the CARB. Too much fuel....

yeah
well its dark out rigth now and i dont have the time at the moment but tomorow im goign to look for vacume leaks and if i dont find any im going to get a timing light thrown on it and if i still dont find anything rong im going to first find out if the carter is indeed a 750 and too big but if it isnt ill just have it adjusted by a mechanic cause i dont realy want to tackle it my self and have it end up to lean and blow up my engine cause as is the motor only has 30700 soemthing miles on it since its last rebuild. ill get back to u guys about the numbers off the carb to find out what size carb it is i might end up buying a new edolbrock 600cfm for it how are they are they good carbs and would that be the right size to get i think they are like 230-240 $ for a nanual choke version.

Edelbrock 600 cfm is perfect...
Their great CARBS. I'm more keen on Holley's and Quadrajets.... but the Edelbrock 600's are awesome, and a 'breeze' to tune.
Good luck bro....
