350 or 305?

I just got a firebird 4 days ago, its is a v8 5 speed, it has edelbrock carburator, and edelbrock intake maniful, the car runs like a monster, I know for sure that the engine and the transmision are not from that car, because it used to be an automatic, and the engine is carburated, also alot of electrical stuff doesn't work (speedometer, tachometer, oil presure gauche, and the temperature gauche) the fuel gauche does work , it has a aftermarket temperature gauche that does work, and the radiator fan isn't electrical, it works with the water pump band.

I also know that the engine has some work inside, it has shorter pistons, and other stuff that I dont really sure.(the car isn't street legal at all in the states) doesn't have the smog band and neither nothing from the emisions, but is allright to drive it in mexico.

How can I tell if the engine is a 350 or a 305??

the quickest way is the casting numbers off the side of the block. Once you have those, you can head over to www.mortec.com and look it up.

The casting # is located on the top of the bellhousing section, driver's side. A lot of fun to find while the engine is in the car.

But, short of disassembly or a volume displacement test, that's the only way to know.

:werd: Plus, there's usually crap built up on the numbers so you might have to do some scrubbing to get to them.

The engine I bought had a rear main leak and had about an inch of sludge built up on the back of the motor...nasty stuff.

Could also be a 327.

It might show up as a 350 on teh casting, but I would also try to do a displacement check to see if it's a 327. (same block, shorter stroke.)

Don't always assume it's a 305 or 350. There are lots of guys who like the 327's too.

yes, but the amount of crankshafts from the 327 era that are large journal are not that common, other than aftermarket. IIRC, only 68 and 69 were large journals.

and no offense or anything, but why is this in the carb board?

i wouldnt worry about it. this kind of stuff is generally posted in the tech/general engine section. But oh well. either way we'll still help you decipher your engine.

does Mexico have emissions

I'm runing both of my firebirds without cat, and the v8 i'm driving it without anything from emissions.

It could be any small block for that matter. Just hope it is not a 262.5, 265, or 267. It could be a 400 for all he knows. On the outside all small blocks look the same.

I'm not sure what gasket you're talking about, but 305 & 350 oil sealing gaskets are the same. Only differences come with specific years, such as '86-earlier using perimeter bolt valve covers and '87-later using center bolt. But, both 305's and 350's changed the same year.
