motor combo
Im in the process of building my first motor. i recently bought a 350 small block bored out 30 over. The question is, the motor came with a weiand dual carb intake and two edelbrock carbs. Is this a good intake and carb setup, or should i switch to a single carb. I have heard some bad things about the dual carb setups and am looking for some more info.

With the design of todays intakes and carburetors, i find it hard to justify, power-wise, why you would run a dual carb setup. If youre in for the looks alone, its tough to beat a dual quad setup. But like i said, now-a-days, single carb manifolds are designed so efficiently that its just hard to justify the need for duals, if power is what you seek.
Holley/Weiand also makes some good intakes that should be considered. Dont focus solely on Edelbrock. The Stealth is also a fairly potent performer (idle-6800 RPM). Also the ActionPLus (Idle-6000 RPM). Im just setting all the cards on the table so you make the most of your money.

What size carbs are they? CFM, model number. Is the manifold a single plane type or Dual plane. Is it a tunnel ram manifold.? Is it a cross ram?
A dual quad set up can be very responsive on the street but needs extra attention to the setup.
The secret to a successfull dual quad setup for the street is use small cfm carbs.
tell me what you've got and I'll advise you on how to make it work for you.
Tell me about the motor you plan to build.
heads, cam, compression, exhaust etc expected power.
what rear gear ratio do you have?. what is the torque converters' stall speed.?

what hes after is info such as where do you want your powerband to be? What is the purpose of this car? Street/Strip? daily driver? Is fuel economy a concern? This like that. Once you tell us that, then we can help select the best combo to suit your needs.

really don't care about the gas mileage, i would like it to be a street strip motor that would push about 300 to 350 hp. I don't have any components other then the stock block (30 over) stock crank and rods, ported heads, and speed pro pistons (9.35:1 w/ 64cc, 8.34:1 w/76cc)

350HP @ the flywheel is fairly easy. 350hp @ the rear wheels (350 RWHP) is a little more involved.
Which do you mean?
Tell me about the cylinder heads.
Valve size ,casting number , how much porting done.
I assume the pistons are flat tops. Is there a number stamped on the top besides .030
What rear gear ratio do you have or are willing to use?
What trans converter stall speed do you have or are willing to get?
do you want a hyd cam, solid lifter cam or roller?
What about idle quality.
How much $$$'s (budget)
what intake manifold and carb do you have right now?

id like to make it at the wheels. The pistons are Federal Mogul Flat Top pistons .30 over 4-valve reliefs, there is a casting number, 345np. Its a th-350 trans with a 2200 RPM stall speed. Stock gears in an open rear, not sure what the ratio is. As for the heads i don't know and won't know untill the end of the week because i am at college and the car and motor are at my house. The cam, what ever would be the best and still keep the car streetable. I have about $1000 to work with

i have a weiand dual carb intake, really don't know the specifics on it (it came with the motor) and two edelbrock carbs, again not sure about the specifics on those either. Thinking about selling them on ebay so i have more money to work with

Well $1000 isn't much to work with to make 350 RWHP
Thats about 430 flywheel hp. Can advise you better once you can tell more about the heads.
How do you feel about getting a good used B&M 144 supercharger?
Here is a tentative build plan.
Something to ponder:
350+.030" SBC
FM-H345NP+.030 flat top pistons
FM speed pro rings +.030" file fit gaps
resized stock rods +arp rod bolts
stock gm 350crank re- machined
ported GM 76cc heads 2.02-1.60 valves (441-920-487-336)
approx compression ratio 8.3:1
Crane Cam Grind #113821
B&M 144 Power Charger
750cfm Holley #4779 or 3310 50cc acc pump and richer sec jetting.
heddman 1-5/8" long tube headers.
Stock HEI Vac Adv distributor with MSD coil and recurve.
This basic 350 street blower combo will easily reach your performance goals at about 6-7psi boost. and be very streetable. Your stock converter and 3.42 gears will be fine.
Good used B&M 144 blowers can be had for $1000-1200.
easy mid to low 12sec quarter miles.
A Powertrax No-slip will solve your open rear issue
and you can install it yourself.
