TBI Conversion

What price range would I be looking at when switching from a TBI to carb engine? Thanks

Depends how nice you want to do it, and if all the parts are new. Just to get a carb on there you will need these things:
Mallory regulator-75
Carb Holley from summit -195
Performer manifold -100 (need to modify center holes)
HEI distributor -150 new from summit, like 20 bucks from a junkyard
various gaskets, brackets for throttle and fuel lines-50

about 600 bucks for all new stuff.

Reuse air cleaner, wires

TCC lockup kit - $160

With the exception of the Summit distributor now on sale and the reg, the rest of the prices look low.

I got a similar question..I have a tired 305 in my car and im looking at two options as of now.. or maybe even 3..part of me wants the easiest and the other part wants the best performance..

The current 305 is a L03 TBI motor.

If i was to buy something like jegs part number 809-10067353k2
what else would i need to get it running in my car? Its a 89 TA with a 700r4.

would the things offered in that package clear the stock hood? ive seen posts talking about camaro hoods, are birds the same ?

just wondering

joe

Keep in mind, those "Crate engines" were probably intended to be GM replacement engines. Think "fleet vehicle." What gives it away? Combustion chamber volume, cam specs, and compression ratio. I've got a feeling that those are going to end up as smogger heads and a tiny cam.

For performance, I'd look at the ZZ4. It seems to be a popular crate engine with decent power. It has more "performance oriented" heads (Vette #113 heads, IIRC), the ZZ4 cam, hydraulic roller at that, the ZZ4 intake (a pretty decent piece). it has a forged steel crank and about 1.5 more compression points (10:1 or so)

That's the ZZ4. There are other engines like the 330 HO with vortec heads. These are among the more favorable crates if power/performance is what you seek. Alternativly, hav eyou priced out the price of building your own? A 350 block can be had relativly cheap at most junkyards.m Just a thought.

No i havnt really looked into building my own..seemed kind of intimidating actually..

So you figure the goodwrench engines with the upgrade packages are no good? Your probably right, this most likely falls into the "If your going to to do it, do it right the first time catagory".

Was kind of trying to do a swap ona budget to get a lil more power but have a reliable better running motor, since my 305 is preety much shot..i mean it runs fine and all, but the smoke i get from hitting the gas pedal isnt fun..only puffs then stops while i drive and happens again sometimes from a stop.

Then the other part of me says i need a 300+ horsepower monster with a nitrous kit for the added kick to take out the local **** :lala:

So the 350 HO delux would prolly be best since it comes with everything to drop it in ..well almost im sure i need more parts to convert from TBI, but it comesn with carb,dist,etc..

So many decisions

Don't get intimidated by building your own engine. Yes, there are lots of parts to sort out, but in the end, what it really boils down to is what your budget is and what you want to do with the engine. Do you have emissions?
