Choke light
Okay folks, I got a choke light coming on all the time. I've taken the time here to read some of the threads, so took the alternator from my 78 caprice, swapped it over to the 85 transam, but the light is still on. Everything is fine on the charge circuit. However, I noticed this weekend that the cold start solenoid plunger is constantly energised when the igniton is on, no matter if I switch the heater on or off, it stays energised at 4.97 volts.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. Cheers.

Hi nate86.
Like i said, I changed over my alternator with the one from my 78 Caprice, same engine etc. & put a multimeter on th check, all output is fine etc so it is something other than the Alternator.

I think what you're looking at is the high idle solenoid, which "typically" is energized when the AC is on. By any chance do you have the heater control in an AC position when you're turning on the ignition?
But, back to the choke: You could also have a bad choke relay, which will turn on the "choke" light, and not send any voltage to the choke thermostat.

I haven't traced down the entire circuit, but I know my solenoid will energize under certain de-acceleration conditions. So, it must be linked to the ECM somehow. But, I've never seen it energize at start-up.
But, who knows what all they've done with these things.
What engine do you have, LG4 I assume?

do you get a buzzing sound as if your key was left in the ignition with the car off? or when the door is open on not accessory but the on but not car running on? cause if you do its your choke relay. i had that prob it kept of buzzing on accell and decell. or when i turned on the lights. i dunno if this is your prob but its what i had. so choke relay its like 4 bux or something from gm.
