Small pop and puff of black smoke from carb??

I have noticed that if i start my car for the first time in the morning on the odd occasion it will make a pop from the carb and a small black puff of black smoke can be seen coming out of the air filter.Like i said it is rare that it does this and only if you give it a little bit of throttle to encourage it to start. Is this the reason or is there something that needs replacing.Otherwise the engine runs and sounds perfect .

Do you drive with the hood off on these rare occasions so you can see the puff of black smoke comming out of the air filter?

Sounds like it may be a little rich at start up.

I would leve it alone if it runs well otherwise.

The carb can take lots of miles or very little miles. If it sat for any lengh of time I would use carb cleaner through the air horns and in the fuel tank. I have had my holley need a rebuild after sitting one winter. It all depends on the fuel and how varinished it gets. Black smoke from the carb is a bad thing. how is your timming and what kind of carb are you using?

if the hally set for more than a couple of months it probly needs a rebuild they do not like varinsh. I would redo it and put innew needle and seatsand 1 jet size larger if you have any major modes don to your car

Pop through the carb on cold start-up is usually the choke not being tight enough (it's too lean) causing a backfire. What are you using for a choke (electric/manual) and have you tried adjusting it? My holley sits for a few months every year, for the last 10 years...still works just fine If it runs fine after it's warmed up, the carb is working as it should....then adjust the choke to make it run better when cold.
