Crossfire to Carb, Air Cleaner????

Hello, I've removed the crossfire injection system from my car, in it's place sits a 350 w/ a quadrajet and a performer intake.

The problem I have is the Crossfire hood. I cannot get any aircleaner to sit on the carb and close the hood. I have a 2" drop base air cleaner w/ a 3" filter, and it's close, but wont quite close. I have a 14" diameter filter that is only 2" high, and if I put that in the drop base, I can get the hood closed, but there is almost no free area left on the filter because the walls of the drop base bottom cover the filter...

The other option is to remove the hood flap assembly, but then I'll have two big holes in the hood to let all kinds of dirt, rain, etc on my nice new engine...

Anyone have another idea?
Thanks!

Have you checked your linkage for clearance? I used the drop-base cleaner, but add a 1/2 inch spacer on top of the carb to get linkage clearance, then go with a 2 1/2 inch element on my performer rpm intake (same height as an air gap) - and I clear stock hood on my 1992. Also, my cleaner only has 1/4 inch lip - you can still see the rubber seal on the element - I'm surprised the walls are so tall on your cleaner housing that a 2 inch element doesn't get air.

Do you have any parts left from the crossfire? I need the ESC sensor. It is on the right side of the engine next to the motor mount.

the crossfire hood with functional hood flaps is a whole different animal from the stock 1992 hood. there is far less hood clearance.

we are running into this same problem on my buddies car. we bought the shortest intake i could find that i felt would feed the moderately built 305. and it's got a holley on top. with a drop base filter assembly and the 3" filter element, we just left the flapper assembly off. there isn't enough room for it. he's been daily driving it for a while now with no real issues, other than the leaves finding there way in.

when you come up with a solution (we haven't figured out one yet) let us know, cause we're interested!

Crossfire Hood Clearance Issues

ck76239,

With a bit of work you should be able to make the clearance you need. I used a standard GM Drop Base (See Photo) and a Low Profile Cap on my sons's '82 (w/CFI Hood). We trimmed off and plugged (Plastic Weld) the drains on the CFI Hood Assy and added drains to the rear od the assy.

However, there was so little air coming through the gap between the upper rim and the cap that we were actually CHOKING the carb continually. We tried drilling some holes in the upper crown and it didn't help too much. I manufactured a homemade dual-snorkel (See Photo) and it gets plenty of air and the CHOKING problem is gone.

It's a bit of work but we sure like the CFI hood. We have an idea about making the scoop "LOOK" functional and hope to have the "IDEA" finished before the F-Body Gathering this weekend....

If you don't want to go to all the trouble.... I think I may have a set of the Block-Off caps (Just a couple black plastic snap-ins) in one of my son's storage boxes.... somewhere? I can look if you like.

Sincerely,
Kurt

Yeah, that would be great if you have block off caps, then I could take the flap assembly out, I could always re-install at a later date...

Just let me know how much $$$ you want and where to send it to, you can e-mail me if you like: ck350@juno.com

Thanks!
Chris

Chris,
I found the block offs! They are NOT perfect. It looks like one corner of one of them got hit with a sander (probably won't notice). I could bead-blast 'em at work on Tuesday (making your like somewhat easier for painting) and mail 'em out to ya'll shortly thereafter. Confirm you want/still need them (see photo). As stated in the PM, all I want is postage three(3) dollars should cover that fine as I'll buy and put them in one of them little padded envelopes.

P.S. #1 Sorry for the delay responding but my son and I have been at the Gathering X in Marietta, GA all weekend......

P.S. #2 I don't want to Steal your thread so I'll just mention that I managed to make my son's '82 flappers work and I'll post up on the thread we started. You might find it interesting....

Sincerely,
Kurt

glad someone got it working! i just said screw it and Kody and i traded hoods. he's got the cowl hood now and i've got the crossfire hood, though it's not much of a crossfire hood anymore as i've cut all the supports out underneath it and put it on the car with 10 Dzus fasteners thus making it into a lift-off hood...oh crap...my car is turning into an all out racer!

woah, that's pretty slick! oh well...i gotta cool "stock" hood now. the flappers are gone and i built some brackets that hold in peices of filter element in the holes. i then sealed the carb to the hood via an airpan i made. it's kinda hard to explain, i'll get pics up soon.
