car wants to die when warm???

Im still in the process of setting the timing and tuning the carb but it would run decently to drive to my garage to where i store it with only open headers.
I put my dual exhaust with flow 40's and now it seems that it starts easier but when it was close to operating range i would drive down the street and it would kinnda surge then die. it happened 10 times on the way to my garage and my buddy said he saw alot of exhaust smoke come out when i started it. Would the exhaust being put on create the carb to be way to rich. I hope this is why and if its normal?

Thanx Nick

It isn't unusual for a high-strung engine to run a bit rich with closed exhaust if it was 'just right' with open headers. What color is the smoke your friend is seeing from the car? Probably black - right? That means its rich. Also, starting really easy when cold is also a sign of an overly rich condition (or your choke is working, if you have one... you didn't say if your carb had one)

What do your spark plugs look like?

I'd say she's probably rich.

Has your engine had any nasty backfires lately? If its rich enough to stall the engine when its warm, I'd take a look at your powervalve - it very well could be blown.

It has a choke but it seems if i use it sprays up what i would think is gas kinnda like smoke shoot out and it has blowout protection. I havent had it really backfire ill have to check the plugs this weekend. Im at school so i can only work on it on weekends. I hope i can get it tuned too.
thanx Nick

Black exhaust is a sign of running excessively rich. I would still check the powervalve though... its easy enough to swap, and they are cheap. Buy another one and see if it runs any better.

Also might be good to check your float level too. Holleys run like crap when its too high.

Well i found out that the port on the carb that holley tells you to hook up to your vaccum advance only pulls 1 on the vaccum gauge. That made a big difference, then we tuned the carb for the most vaccum and it began to run even better. I also found after this that if i had my car on a hill or just let it idle for a while it would die after taking off. The bowls needed to be adjusted.
Now the car ran great but i think when we were messing with the mixture the motor wasnt completely warmed up because after driving a while if i accelerate 3/4 down and let off the rpms drop down to 500 and almost wants to die but doesnt. The timing is set at 16* could it be that the car wasnt warm enough when tunning and the carb is still a little rich. Also it still hesitates for a sec and then revs like a champ.
