What is the pros and cons of mechanical pumps?

I really cannot stand the mallory regulator and tpi fuel pump. I want to go mechanical. So, what is the pros and cons of a mechanical setup?

The mallory keeps pressure erradic and sounds like I have a bad alternator.

I have a feeling some people will say do neither and get an inline electric carb pump.

Anyways question stands.

Mechanical pumps are reliable, don't draw electrical power, SUPER easy to replace, cheap, and are actually meant to work with a carb. No hassles, no fuss no muss.
Drop the tank and toss the pump, then set it up right with a "normal" carb pick up. Then remove the filter that's under the drivers seat, and put in a little carb filter after the mech pump, and bolt on the mech pump. Use a return style pump, the normal stock Carter 6626 or whatever it is should work great.

buy a good mechanical pump. 110gph for anything with any power. I had a store bought cheapie and with the foot to the floor my guage i setup on the windshield went to 1psi. The car never skipped a beat either, but i suspect if i had kept it floored for a while it could run lean. I currently have the summit 110gph pump. I would reccomend it.

Re: What is the pros and cons of mechanical pumps?

Does anyone have some pictures of the clearance they have between their pump and the triangular brace that attaches from the front fame rail to the K member? I have a mechanical pump but the lines are going to interfere with that brace and I was wondering if it was just a problem with the pump I have or if people had modified their braces.

Thanks

I'm not really sure what it is. It has no name on it at all, it looks like a Summit pump but it has no markings on it anywhere that I've seen.

This looks like it may be the one I have but I'm not sure.

There shouldn't be any clearance problems with that pump.

I'm going to have to fiddle around with it I guess. If it is that summit pump it states that the thing rotates but I suppose I'd have to loosen some screws up to actually move it As it is set up now the fuel lines will not clear that triangular brace.

To reorient the fittings you have to unbolt the bottom and reclock it.

Yeah thats what it looks like. I was afraid if I just tore it apart that a thousand tiny parts would fall out I'd be buying another one

I attached a pic of the dillemma:

You'll be surprised by how few parts there actually are to a mechanical pump. There's nothing to fall outwhen you remove the screws holding the top on.

An orientation more like this should work for you.

Indeed. Thanks for the info. I found numbers on the pump it turns out it is a Holley 12-327-11.
