clearence issues.
Hey everyone i have a 85z28 originally 5.0 carb and now has a 350 carb. Well my problem is that i have a rpm performer intake manifold and a i believe 2 1/2 " k&n air filter but my damn hood doesn't close. it looks like i need about an inch for the hood to close. So my question is has anyone delt with this and what would be the easiest approach to getting it to close without goint to a cowl hood. I was thinking of either modifying the top metal piece of the filter because its arched up a bit then see if that closes and then if it doesn't maybe cut off some of the frame from the hood. Any thoughts i finally got my car running great but can't get the hood to close i swear if its not one thing its another

i think u have to get a small cowl hood. Not nothing major. Do you also have a aircleaner that sits low ontop the carb? like the edelbrock does. i have i think a 2 inch cowl and it fits, i have the performer rpm edelbrock intake , with a half inch spacer. i think a 3 inch filter too

i like cowl hoods but don't want to spend the money on that at the moment and i kinda wanna keep it looking stock. Do you have a part number for the edelbrock air cleaner?
this is the air filter i currently have and would i be able to go any smaller with the engine still getting a good amount of air through it

Sounds like the famous "triangle of death". One backfire, start the filter on fire, goodbye car.
There isn't any reason from the information you provided that a drop-base open element air cleaner wouldn't work on your car.

I bought a dropbase open element from autozone but then it was touching my linkage on my carb so I had to get a 1/2" spacer to sit on top of the carb and then bought a k&n filter for it. This is on an 84 ta with a flat hood, 350 and edelbrock performer rpm manifold...works great!

Re: clearence issues.
I have no part numbers. I bought the drop base air cleaner off the shelf at autozone and then took out the filter and told the guy I wanted a K&N the same size its either a (2" or 2 1/4") and installed it out in the parking lot and found out it touched my linkage so I went to return it and the guy behind the counter looked at the situation and had me try the spacer and it worked perfect. My carb is a holley 750VS manual choke. I also used the same setup on wifes camaro that has edelbrock rpm manifold on a 307 chevy with a holly 600VS with the same results. Just ask the people there they will help you.
