1986 Trans Am Issues

Alright so long story short bought 86 TA NO engine No Tranny in car, came with original 305. I rebuilt 305, Cam'd 10:1 CR, 1.94/1.5 heads. I didnt finish all the wiring under the hood, the temp sensor was broke off the block and it has no AC, wired the fan into ignition on power under hood so it wont overheat. If I drive around the car gets warmed up and if i turn it off it wont start again. Brand new distributor, new coil, cap, wires, plugs, ignition module, starter, fuel pump,battery(1000CA,800CCA), it has a 1988 T5, anyone got any suggestions?

Re: 1986 Trans Am Issues

you stated that it does not start. what does that mean? it doesnt crank, or it doesnt fire? If you run the car, then turn it off, and it then cranks but does not fire, its usually caused by vapor lock. The fuel line on the passengerside frame get really close to the manifolds/headers and can cause vapor lock, its a common problem with the carb cars. it is carb right?

aka - "See your life flash before you." As in, the flash that occurs when that filter breaks and sends gasoline over a hot engine.

Get rid of it.

Now, what engine did your car have originally? I know you said "305", but LG4, LB9? Which one?

Re: 1986 Trans Am Issues

What happened when you gave it fuel (sprayed starting fluid in it), to fix a no-fuel condition? And what happened when you used the "clear flooding" technique (press gas pedal slowly to the floor ONCE, hold it there, wait 10 seconds, attempt to start while holding the gas to the floor), to fix a too-much-fuel condition? It's one or the other; just gotta figure out which. Should take all of about 30 seconds to figure out and fix, if you're slow like me. You're smart though, probably take you ALOT less than that. I can't figure out why you're even wasting time posting on the Internet. Takes longer than figuring it out.

Those clear fuel filters are DEATH. Ever see what happens to a car when they fail? Let's just say, the fire dept can't get there fast enough; couldn't make it in time even if it happened right in their driveway.

Sounds like typical flooding from a blown-out power valve.

See my signature for troubleshooting help.

Re: 1986 Trans Am Issues

I didnt think about the starting fluid, i have to give it gas everytime to start it anyways, hitting gas to floor waiting doesnt help
