lo3 to carbed 305
hey guys ive decided that im done with the computer b.s and ready to jump into the world of old school power, i came up with a build that i would like people to give me their opinions on,
Eddy 600 carb
350 vortec heads milled down to 58cc
performer rpm intake
lt4 cam
3.08 gear( i love roll racing)
msd box
How much horsepower am i looking at here, im hoping when all is said and done i have about 275-300 hp

Edelbrock carbs are cheap. If you're willing to live with what you pay for, then go for it.
What distributor are you getting?

If you're getting/using an MSD box, their 8361 distributor is a good choice. Or, the Summit 850055 knock-off (made by MSD for all I know) as a cheaper alternative. You'll need a separate coil - you could use your stock coil, but a good aftermarket is only $35-$50 more.
The best thing about the Edelbrock carbs is they are cheap. See statement above about what you pay for. The next best thing is you can change the metering rods without taking anything apart - but that's where the good news ends. You want to tune beyond that (and you probably will have to), more complicated disassembly required. It's not the best carb for your use (both legal and illegal).
You do understand that this modification is illegal in all 50 of the United States for use on public streets, roads, and by-ways.

Removing or defeating emissions equipment, or replacing with non-certified equipment, is the illegal part. There is no legal carburetor for your year car.

The Edlebrock carb is cheap, but its not a poor choice, it will work about as well on that combo as any other demand based carb. If you're manual, forget the Edlebrock and get a mechanical secondary carb.
I have a similar build to what you're suggesting that runs pretty well, its a Summit K1101 cam - 204/214, .424/.442 all @ .050", ZZ3 manifold (GM copy of the Performer manifold), 1406 Edlebrock carb (the same 600cfm one you're planning on), and Summit HEI, SLP headers dumped after the Y-pipe, all on the "225hp" 305CI crate motor. Turns a 2500rpm stall, shift kit, and 3.73's out back. It works pretty well, vortec heads would be my next mod, with a XE268 cam.
I would think think your suggested setup could hit 280bhp and dip into the 13's - thats with converter and gears - with a 3.08 and a stock converter the first 25mph are gonna be real real boring.

This car an auto? LT4 cam is gonna work better with more gear, at least a 3.45 or more. If your auto, you better be thinking stall converter as well.

This is the old LT4 cammed take-off.

This is the current take-off. 1st gear to 45 mph and 2nd to 85 mph.

i got the rpm and I like it but you are going to need to get a 1/4" carb gasket to clear the rear vacuum port

If you're still looking for a complete ignition system, heres what I'll be using in my car when I mod it:

Re: lo3 to carbed 305
Don't count on it. I ran the LT4 cam in a 305 TPI in my fullsize van with 3.08 gears (equivalent to 2.73s or so with my 29" tall tires), and a 1,600 rpm stall converter. It pulled hard from off-idle to 5,000 rpm despite stock TBI swirl ports. I am running an even larger cam, 305 vortecs, and SLP runners now and still have a strong take-off. Strong for 5,500 lbs anyway.
Stock LT4--- 203@ .476/ 210@ .480 (1.6RR)--- 115 LSA
I was thinking Hot cam for some reason:
LT4 Hot Cam --- 218@ .525/ 228@ .525 (1.6RR)--- 112 LSA --- 1800-5800 RPM
The stock LT4 cam would play just fine with a stock converter and highways gears.
Still - I think both your van, and the 305 combo being discussed here, would benefit from stall and gears - I can't tell you how many stronger, more powerful car's pride I've stole w/ a solid launch. Sure, for a long enough race, or a run from a dig, those guys would pull me no problem, but out of the hole its the ticket.
In this case, the car is a 5sp, so forget the converter, and forget the Edlebrock, Five7 is right, the 600cfm double pump is probably the best performance option in this case.
