problem installing 600cfm edelbrock

i have a 305 v8 camaro, and im switching from my stock Q-jet to a 600cfm edelbrock because my stock one is having problems. i bought the adapter plate to make it fit since it wouldnt without it, got it all hooked up, but i had to take off my egr valve to do it. with it on, the egr valve wont fit.....but with the egr valve, the carb wont fit? what do you guys do? can you even run the car without an egr valve? i had to block the hole otherwise my car wouldnt even start. how am i supposed to use my edelbrock carb if it wont fit with the egr valve there. thanks

Your user info says "redding ca". Do you have emissions inspection and/or testing there?

Re: problem installing 600cfm edelbrock

yes, but i just got this carb until i can afford another remanned Q-jet, mine is acting up and someone told me it wasn't worth to pay and get it rebuilt. plus i don't have to smog it until next year anyways so I'm not really worried about that right now

Buy a egr valve block of plate. Not having the stock quad on your car is gonna screw with your computer.

Did you get a vacuum/mechanical advance distributor as well? Do you have a TCC lock-up system lined up? Did you get the TV cable geometry cable corrector bracket for the Edelbrock carb?

Personally, I would never remove a stock q-jet and put on an Edelbrock carb. It is bound to be more expensive than fixing whatever is wrong with the q-jet.

Re: problem installing 600cfm edelbrock

:\ i don't have any of that stuff. i didn't know i needed anything extra...they should say that on the package....ats the kind of info they should really put with the carb. thats one way to blow my money i guess. i plan on going back to a remanned Q-jet, i just cant afford it yet. if i just block off my egr valve with the plate will it hurt my engine just until i can afford a new carb?

You won't hurt the engine by blocking off the EGR plate.

You will do your fuel economy a major hurt if you don't get a vacuum/mechanical advance distributor, and your transmission if you don't set up the TCC lock-up and use the TV geometry corrector bracket.

Re: problem installing 600cfm edelbrock

yeah for now I just had a peice of bailing wire holding it until i can get the bracket, its only about 10$...the distributor on the other hand is going to run about 80 or 90. but like you said I don't think it's going to be worth it even..the holes on this carb are way smaller than on my quadrajet i cant imagine how that would make better performance..i dont even care about the performance part right now i just want my car to run right again

Re: problem installing 600cfm edelbrock

Your engine will run decent with the stock distributer and that carb, but I wouldn't do it. The previous owner of my car swapped stock q-jet for a holley and didn't change to a non-electronic distributer. I drove it for a while like that without realizing it would be an issue. I believe it contributed to the demise and subsequent need to rebuild my engine.
Summit has a mechanical advance distributer for about $90.

Re: problem installing 600cfm edelbrock

it idles kinda rough especially at first before it warms up, its noticeably slower than my quadrajet which was already not running good(so compared to a new q-jet this thing is a turtle) the gas pedal feels a little tight and doesn't feel like it goes all the way down..but im afraid to push it too hard because i don't wanna stretch the cable, it bogs down when i go to take off, and if i barely push the gas its so bad it almost dies. The guy who sold it to me told me i might need to re tune it because i think they said they had it on a chevelle 350 or something..

Check for vacuum leaks. Pretty common, especially with an adapter.

I assume you didn't change the distributor to a vacuum/mechanical advance type. Did you reset the timing? Computer setting is zero degrees; without the computer functioning (which it won't be without the CC carb), you need to advance it to about 10-12. It still won't have very good fuel economy or power without proper advance, but at least it should idle better.

Re: problem installing 600cfm edelbrock

i haven't switched yet, since i think i still plan on getting a q-jet back and this should only be tempurary...haven't messed with my timing either lol. I'll try that, I'm pretty sure my timing was off anyways. And I tried switchnig some of the lines around and it did actually seem a little better. I still don't really like it though..it seems so underpowered compared even to my badly running q jet, it almost makes me just want to put it back on and deal with the old problems...but first ill try this stuff out and see if it can help me. thanks alot
