tbi to carb conversion problem

over the weekend i converted my 91 rs from tbi to carb. i'm having a few issues but the one i'm mainly worried about is i used the Mallory 4309 regulator. i notice when the car is at idle the gauge is reading zero, but when i rev the car and hold lets say at 1500 it reads 6-7 psi. is this just a minor adjustment or a major headache

Re: tbi to carb conversion problem

gauge is mounted to one of the ports on the regulator. as far as the other issues when i get on the car i hear valve clatter, no matter how much i play with the distributor it don't go away unless i really turn the distributor clockwise( more then normal). and the other problem i got is the car will idle one min @700 - 750 and then it will idle @ 1000-1200. this became very frustrating haha

1. did you mount the regulator on the return side.
2. how did you set the timing when you set the distributor.

almost sounds as a vacuum leak.

Re: tbi to carb conversion problem

Sounds like something is MAJOR not hooked up right.

Line from the fuel pump (key on, engine off, gas should SPEW VIGOROUSLY out that line for a second or 2) to the "in" port; other fuel line (return) to the "return" port; line to the carb in one of the "out" ports; gauge in another of the "out" ports; pipe plugs in the rest of the "out" ports. Teflon tape on all the fittings, don't overtighten.

If yours isn't hooked up like that, it'll never work right.

As far as the "timing", what non-computer distributor (with vac and mech adv) did you use?

Re: tbi to carb conversion problem

this regulator had a million ports haha. the return is marked and at the bottom. (opposite of the set screw) and there are 4 ports for inlet. if u look inside the one of the holes there are no separation from what i can see from all the ports. so i plumbed one from the car, one to the carb, one for the gauge, and the last i blocked off. as far as the distributor i removed the tbi one and dripped in a vac advanced one in the same spot. i gutted the insides cause i'm using msd. so i'm using the mag pick up.i was thinking vac leak also.

Re: tbi to carb conversion problem

There should be 4 ports that can be either the inlet or the outlets. 1 of the 4 (or however many it turns out there really are) from the pump, 1 to the carb, 1 to the gauge, pipe plugs in the rest.

Sounds like it isn't hooked up right.

How does your hookup compare to the instructions?

Re: tbi to carb conversion problem

the only thing marked on the regulator was the return. that was it. the other ports all look the same

Re: tbi to carb conversion problem

my hook up is how the instructions say to do it. what also happens is when the car is at idle she will shut off in less then a minute cause it seems to run out of fuel. the pump is not shutting off so it has to be this regulator

mines doing the seems to run out oif gas thing also i'm gonna try turning the pressure up on the regulator
when i hit the throttle looking inside the carb it's like a fine small stream, isn't it supose to be a nice large spray pattern?
i've checked the fuel pump it shoots fuel fine
