Re: distributer wires

Ignition is Pink which goes to either the "+" terminal on the coil or the "Bat" terminal on the HEI

The tach wire is White

Re: distributer wires

Should just be pink coming from the body harness that's the color that was on my 86 LG4 and what I have seen on schematics.

Re: distributer wires

I'm not finding my power or tach wires, the ones I have hooked up went to the grey connector on the distributer, they're black with white tracer for tach and pink with grey tracer for ignition

Re: distributer wires

okay i think i found my mistake, does the power and tach wires run to the ignition control module? i used the wires out of the grey connector that went to the coil, but i think the wires i need ran to the ignition module in the distributer, am i right?

Re: distributer wires

Pink and white wires are built into the vehicle wiring harness. The "other" wires you're referring to were built into the distributor/module wiring harness and go from a big 3-wire connector on the side of the distributor, up by the coil, down to the module inside the distributor.

Not sure if that helps. Especially considering I'm not sure what you're doing.

Re: distributer wires

Ah, gotcha. I'm not sure what the distributor/coil was for a 86 V6 motor, unfotunately. I seriously doubt it was a large cap HEI, though!

Here's what matters: the wire that went to the coil's + terminal FROM THE VEHICLE WIRING HARNESS should go to the BATT/12V+ terminal on the large cap HEI distributor you are now using. The wire that went to the - terminal of the coil FROM THE VEHICLE WIRING HARNESS should go to the TACH terminal on the HEI.

If your car did not come from the factory with a tachometer there will not be a wire in the wiring harness to hook up to the TACH terminal of the HEI. Which would leave you with only the BATT/12V+ terminal to hook up.

The power feed wire (12V+/BATT) will be a larger gague wire- 10ga, if memory serves. The TACH wire, if you have one, will be smaller- about 16ga.

For the most part GM keeps the same wire color codes from V6 to V8 to keep things simple. The V6 the ignition wire is Pink coming out of the engine harness not the ECM harness. (there are two harnesses at the back of the block, engine and ECM) Even on my old 72 Camaro Pink was switched hot and Orange was constant hot (post fuse block).

It looks like the V6 distributor is an external HEI coil so the connector that went to the coil with the black and pink wire is what you want. The pink wire will go the the internal HEI +BAT terminal. The tach wire, the only thing different from V6 to V8 looks to be the Black/Wht wire going to the instrument cluster.

There are 4 wires that went from the ECM harness to the ignition module (Blk/Red, PPL/Wht, White, Tan/Blk). these were all in one connector and would not be connected to any connection on the Internal HEI distributor cap. Also these wires are the same color for both V8 and V6.

One more thing. Your Tach is calibrated for a V6 and will not work properly for a V8 unless you have swapped the gauge cluster or have had the tach modified. V8's have two addition ignition pulses per RPM

I'm still not finding this, I found the wires that went to the ignition module, but from what your saying I don't need then correct? The body harness should come out by the brake booster again correct? There are 2 bulk heads there, the only large pink wire I found seems to be going to the starter wiring harness, I completely de loomed the computer harness and pulled it away from the car and hung it to get it away from everything, that's the one that came from the passenger fender area correct?

For reference. My power wire was pink with a black tracer

I'm guessing you are not using the ECM anymore correct and this is for the 86 in your sig correct? If so then the 4 wires I listed from the ECM are no longer used. Also I would remove the ECM harness wiring all together to clean things up. If you are just using it for just pump and fan control that can be modified to work without the ECM.

The pink wire I'm talking about is from the ignition and only hot when the key is in the run or start position. You can go under the dash and tap into the ignition harness and run a new wire out to the distributor.

My 86 had the LG4 motor to begin with. I had problems with the original carb and some other parts. I had a cam, old HEI distributor and Holley 600 sitting around and found a used Air Gap manifold for $25 so I swapped things out and eliminated the ECM and harness. I had parted out a 87 Iroc and now I have the dual fans in my car. I also installed a lower temp coolant switch in the head and ran a bypass switch into the car incase I wanted to turn the fans on manually.
