TBI to Carb

ok first off i know i saw the article saying what i need and how to switch tbi to carb but i cant find it this time, probably wrong keywords or something. anywas.

i have a 92 camaro witht he 305 tbi and i want to switch it to carb. nothing fancy just carb. i guess i need a new intake and a dist thats vaccum controlled and ofc a carb correct?. anything else, for example what about the computer?

after i get my part list im going to a pick n pull, so which vehicles would be idea to grab said parts from? like i said i dont want nothing fancy. just need this motor to last till i get everything for my swap. a friend is going to pull this motor and do a cheap rebuild/reseal.

Re: TBI to Carb

Not sure why you want to switch unless something is catastrophically wrong. The TBI is going to be more reliable, get better MPG and make equivlent HP. You're not gaining anything by going to carb.

Also, do you need emissions where you are? If you do, you cannot do the swap and pass.

That said, you need an older vacuum run Distributor, and a vacuum carb. I recommend Qjet, but others like Hollys and Edelbrocks. YOu will also need a way to control the lockup on your torque converter. TCI makes a decent controller for around $75.00.

As for electrical..

disconnect your sensors including 02, leave your tach hooked up but you really don't need anything else. Tuck the harness inside the fender for later if you ever want to swap back. It's pretty strait forward.

Re: TBI to Carb

ya there is something wrong with the car. theres always something. i have a grimling in the tbi system and im done replacing and fixing things so im going to the simple easy fix way. im probably only putting a 2barrel or small 4 barrel. its a factory 305 lol. plus its always running rich for some reason and im just done with this tbi system for now. i have a t-5 so looks like i save 75 there. and no i dont need emissions.

so old 305s... like 80s and below so have the parts? o and i know i need a fuel pressure regulator.

You will need to run a Mallory 4309 Fuel Pressure regulator with the carb. no more than 7Psi. Probably closer to 6. Leave your pump in your tank and make sure you don't cut the wiring for it. Make sure you hook up the return line, you will need it to keep the pump cool.

1992 and below 305 parts are nearly all the same. I'd get a 600cfm carb and Edelbrock performer intake. $150 or so for the intake and if you rebuild it yourself, you can find a cheap 600cfm carb for it. they're about $300 new.

Re: TBI to Carb

i was thinking of pulling the carb/intake/dist from the same 305. ofc rebuild the carb but again i dont need anything fancy since its a factory motor. and im trying not to bust my tran open lol. i realize a factory intake will choke the motor sum but i do have factory heads and what not. plus my swap is to a ls1/t56.

Re: TBI to Carb

the issues with your factory intake, is I don't believe it has the 4 port opening or proper dual plane opening to run a 4bbl carb.

You should be able to pick up a decent dual plane carbed intake in a wrecker yard. Any Chevy 305 from 82-87 that had a carb, which is a lot of cars, would have it. You just need to pull it.

your current heads will work fine for the swap.

Don't worry about the difference between a 305 and 350 in stock form. Not enough of a difference to matter.
