Serious about issues with cold starts, Foul plugs and sick of cleaning spark plugs
I have a good 477hp chev in my 82 running a 750Street Hp open top type carb. while the air fuel is setup on a dyno and perfect when hot and running, its pethetic on a cold start until i pump pump pump that gas pedal to get it started and it is a pr*ck of a thing until its warmed up then its perfect, BUT over time it will need the "black carbon covered Spark Plugs removed"
I am leaning on a holley sniper or sniper stealth unit to FIX this problem once and for all.
Is there any drawbacks or things i need to look at prior to spending $1500.
car runs 98 fuel, has 10.25 comp runs like a dream when the plugs are fresh and pulls like a train and is a good low 12 second ET car 1/4 mile times 101%
Yes one of the Holley EFI Systems, would be able to provide a more enjoyable "Cold Start" and acclimate to seasonal weather changes.
It is pretty difficult to beat modern Electronic Fuel Injection for Cars that actually do a fair bit of Driving...
and not only Racing.
A Holley 4150 Carburetor with no Air-Horn (for a Choke) and Mechanical-Secondaries...
was never intended to run in all types of weather conditions, without adjustments/ calibration changes to the Carburetor.
This whole car in reality going back 30 years ago would be deemed a race car, its running a sizeable solid cam, a lot of advance, the carb really is a race carb with 3 circuits designed by holley to fit between the street replacements and the dominators we see in racing. ALSO these engines are setup on a dyno and dialed in at operating temperatures 160,180 f and air fuel was at 13. this cold start thing 'winter" in Australia is like summer in Canada. A cold start morning here is around 55f to 60F and while the air is cool its very wet 'humid" and a cold start needs the extra fuel or a Choke. I did buy a 750DP mech secondary with a choke and took it to my engine guy to do a final check over the whole car and he put my original open top 750 back on it and said it pulls like a train. Its a bit hard to have a carby old school setup and expect it to start like my wifes Hyundai i30.
This car only does a bit of open road driving and trips to the local 1/4 mile strip and back, its just really hard to change the plugs as its right hand drive and the steering rod has to come off and the headers make it a nightmare to get to 3 plugs.
I will look at the Holley Throttle body type systems like the Stealth EFI thing that looks like a carby. NOT cheap at $1500+ in America or $2800 in Australia. plus fitting.

Dear Sir who put the 12 bolt together,, i am still running the 10 bolt 7 3/4 setup with an eaton tru trac and 3.42:1 i dont know how long it will last.
Fixing cold start issues was a major driving force behind going sniper. Temps range between 40-105F when I am starting my car in the spring and summer so I wanted something that would adapt. With the sniper I turn the key, wait 2 seconds for the pump to prime and then it just starts. I did do some tuning to the temp vs idle speed and cold start enrichment tables but the stock stuff got me super close. No regrets on the sniper I got more HP, 4MPG and way better driving, starting and idle. I tuned the carb with a wide band and a vac gauge but sniper was the way to go. I do recommend the progressive linkage so it only opens 2 butterflies under 40% throttle with all 4 the car was a giant pain to start in 1st without burning out.
For fuel I used a 1992 TPI tank pickup and a walboro 255 pump. 3/8 line and return with the built in fuel pressure regulator
Thanks for the reply, the carby is great once its warmed up and its got power to burn, with the old 408 i was running the car ran 13.0@ 107mph 15 times or more and the engine was basicly stock and around 400hp.
the old 400 would run out of puff at 5200rpm.
this new engine has a hefty solid cam and a 3300 rpm stall converter and is 480hp and 460 tq and while that no big deal its more than enough for the street. my car is 2887lbs only on the scales at the strip and i did have wheel spin issues with the old 400 with 255 tires.
If i can get a Sniper stealth complete kit i will buy it today but the holley site says october 2022 delivery.
I had this car 22 years and its brand new again and nobody will pay good money if its not starting properly and fouls plugs every month.
I will sell the car to buy a home. And buy another one next year..
Good find. I went with the MSD Atomic 2 due to the integrated fuel pressure sensor, but it started right up once I got a grounded injector (stuck open) fixed. You’ll need to go through the same process you did with the carb to really dial it in, but it’s much easier to get there.
After my car sitting all winter it was 45F out I turned the key waited 2 second for the prime and the car started and idled no problem and drove away a few seconds later like a new car. With my carb that was a few minute procedure. Honestly the sniper was my favorite mod even my wife who knows nothing about cars was blown away how smooth the car was and how much more power it had. I spent a long time tuning the carb with a vacuum gauge and an A/F meter and I thought it ran great. I was no where close. When I swapped to 1.6 rockers I noticed the tune was unhappy. I reset to the base MAP and about about 6 minutes of driving it was back on track ready to go again. Super easy. The only mod I recommend is the progressive linkage so it acts like a 4bbl carb with mechanical secondaries. This list might not be perfect but it is damn close to what I needed in the end. I also added an inline pressure gauge.
I got the last sniper stealth in gold from holley.
Holley in KY has no stock until late 2022. They also said last week computer chips are waiting from Asia.
I allways set up the carbs ob a dyno on that same engine.
We went to a solid cam and picked up 70hp And the engine needed the open top 750dp.
Air fuel was at 13 all good but them initial starts are the issue.
i will alao put my spare victor junior on the engine same time.
It should run over 500hp and 480tq as it was 478+-3hp 6000rpm and 465tq at 4600.
my car is right hand drive and its a nightmare to change plugs, i use denso
