Car won’t fire up.

So basically I have a firebird trans am 1986 v8 fuel injected. I put a lot of work into and still doesn’t stay on. I need help figuring it out. Basically I changed the fuel pump, fuel filter, clean the fuel lines, new coil, spark plug wires, spark plugs, new ignition switch, relays. New maf sensor, tps. New rebuilt alternator new battery. The car use to crank and stay on and idle randomly. Then suddenly it won’t fire up. Cranks up and just won’t stay on yet it seems to cut on then off. Idk if it’s the starter it has failed before. Can it be its draining power and causing a start issue. I also feel like I messed up while changing my valve covers I felt a rocker arm lose so I tighten it a little idk if that through the whole car off. Any ideas???

Re: Car won’t fire up.

Set valve lash properly and do basic troubleshooting.
what are you missing , good compression, fuel , spark, correct timing ?
why throw all the parts at it has it sat for along time ?

I don’t know if it’s the timing the car starts up sometimes like really nice. Also yes the car has sat for a long long while. How would this valve lash be done ? Doubt it’s the fuel it use to rev up super nice also when given gas

yet how can I tell which are cylinder valves??? I’m guessing cylinder valve is the exhaust?? and intake valves is intake valves. Think you can give me a diagram? Like idk which are which. I have notes I’m taking and from a “Pontiac Haynes book” says at 0 lash on piston 1 I can adjust 1,2,5,7 intake valves. Then 1,3,4,8 exhaust valves. I just don’t understand which is which like I know each cylinder has two rockers so for example (1) piston which rocker is the exhaust and which is the intake?

Re: Car won’t fire up.

Pull the vc pretty obvious which is inTake and exhaust by looking at exhaust ports and valve orientation.

this ain’t my engine just as example. So I’m looking at the pictures and it looks like the first rocker is the intake and the second one next to it is the exhaust is this correct that means on my firebird it should be in that same order right ? I doubt it would be flip or would it doubt it….??! Anyways can anyone confirm. Also what you mean “pv”

This is a Gen 1 sbc cylinder head; they are all identical in regards to valve-port orientation:

I don't recommend using a service manual from a different manufacturer. Find one on ebay for your specific 3rd gen. Additionally, Haynes or any other non-Helms manuals are neither complete nor accurate in their content.
