Bypassing computer for non CC carb
I have heard that I can put my computer in "diagnostic mode" so I can run a non CC carb and distributer but my gages, trans, etc., will still function properly without the SES light on. Is this true? I want to keep the computer there just in case I get moved to a state that does emissions checks. I want to use a non CC carb and distributer because I got told by Comp Cams that the best cam I can use is the XE256-10 cam with 212/218 @.050, .447/.454 lift. That doesn't sound like much. Anyway, sorry for being long winded I just need to know about the computer bypassing the carb and distributer but nothing else. Thanks!

I think this is the only time it is safe to say, screw what the cam companies say. They have no real experience with what cams are fine with a computer, so they will tell you some really weak choice that happens to have a carb EO number to cover their *** .
Fact is you can run any streetable bumpstick no problem with the stock computer set-up, including chip.
If you want to swap to non-computer controlled anyway (i don't know why you'd want to give up the gas mileage though), you don't have to do anything. Simply pull the bulb from the SES light and leave the harnesses alone. All your guages and such will work fine they have nothing to do with the ecm. I'm not so sure about cruise control though, but it 'should' still work, as long as you leave teh ecm powered.
If you wanted to remove the harnesses for teh puter, that is whe you would start messing guages and such up, cuz some of their wiring does share harnesses, so cutting the wrong stuff would be bad. But since you want to leave it their for the future you'll be fine. Just make sure you don't melt anything on your exhaust.

Yep he's right about the ECM/guages deal, nothing to worry about there.
I do not share the same view on the camshaft being 'not much' as you two see it, since that profile is very very close to what I run in my 383.
Lingenfelter part# 74216
213/219 @.050 sometimes adv at 216/219
with 114 LSA... sometimes adv at 112 LSA
and .462/.470 lift at 1.5:1 ratio.
It's perfect for street & mileage and will be great for me well into the 9 second range @130+mph
I don't consider myself a camshaft guru, but I can demonstrate what has worked for me.
good luck

So, do you think that with a properly matched 350 with the computer still hooked up I could get into the 13's?

Assuming everything else is working, and you're not trying this at 4000 feet, yes. It's called the "350 HO Camaro Conversion Kit".

I wasn't saying that cam wasn't going to be OK, he just made it sound like comp told him that was as big/radical as you can get (in relation to the stock computer.) I've seen CCCS run an l69 w/ 140k miles and a comp 280 magnum (230' @.050) with no problems. Borderline streetable with 12" of vacuum, but it never threw a code.

edit, and yes, getting into the low 13s should be a piece of cake. My 85 ran 13.9 with a $1200 350 longblock, smog garbage heads (w/ 8 burnt exhaust valves and a partially blown headgasket), and a 3.08 one legger (and getting 26mpg highway, 20 city). A 3.73 posi alone would have dropped me into the low/mid 13s. W/ a converter and/or heads and slicks, 12s would have been there.

I am going to keep the computer then. I was thinking about using either one of Crane's Compucam or Comp's 268 High energy cam or a slightly larger Comp XE cam. Thanks for all of your help!

Hello guys, just a note to Ed, my 355 w/comp cams 280 magnum idles at 900 rpm with 15" of vacuum. It is also very streetable with a 2600 stall converter. I'm running a carb though so maybe that makes a difference? Just curious...

wannabe,
Is your computer hooked up? Does your vacuum pulse? I understand that you could have good vacuum but if it pulses it will throw a code.

Hi Wiggy,
There's no computer in the car and my vacuum gauge seems very steady. I'm running full time vacuum to my distributer so my idle advance is in the area of 20-22 degrees with the engine running.
