89 vert pricing

I must admit that this is my first post here. I am pretty fluent in first gen camaros, but I need expert help with this 3rd gen question

I came across a 89 RS 305 vert today. 56,000 original miles, new top, paint, and exhaust. I know the car, becuase it is owned by a local doctor. He kept it either in his garage at home or at his office. The car has an ASC sticker in the door, but the VIN was decoded by this site as a true convertible. There were several (more than 40) RPO codes, so I did not write them all. The car has PW,PL, cruise, air ,cassette, 15 inch wheels, auotmatic, and cloth (red) interior. He is asking $5650.

OK, now here are couple ?'s. What gives with the ASC sticker even though it has a 6th digit "3" in the VIN? How much is it worth?

Thanks for the help in advance
Brad

thanks for the quick reply. What options make this car valuable, and what is it worth now?

Is it a Z28? Will have IROC or Z28 all over it. Is it in good condition? What does the paint look like. The interior in good shape? Normal 'used ' car stuff.

Convertibles came with 305 engine and automatic. Federal safety requirements.

The low mileage is a PLUS, a convertible another plus

Is it a twotone paint job? RS? What color.

Interesting enough, the second 88 I bought came from Missouri and made it's way to Dallas area. Had 46K miles when it came down here in 99. Now has 80k

As far as worth? What is it worth to you? According to the general consensus, I paid WAAAAYYY too much for my first one...88 IROC convertible. and a tad too much for my second one....88 Sport convertible...your 5650 is about half way between what I paid for mine.

If it is in good shape, I personally think 5650 is a fair price.

Check and make sure the top mechanisms are all fucntioning....tonneau release button, back bow release.

Paint is new (factory black). Maybe 6 months old, Interior is in excellent shape for a 15 year old car. No rips/tears in seats or carpet. 1 minor carpet flaw in the rear floorboard. It is black with a grey two tone and red srtipe between the two tones. Black 15 inch wheels. Definately an RS. Everything works cruise, a/c, stereo, all speakers, tranny shifts weel, motor and tranny don't smell burned. I thought cars made into convertibles by ASC started out as coupes thereby getting the "2" on the VIN, but this car had the "3". Agian this is not my area of expertise.

Thanks

That is a very reasonable price to pay for an RS, if it was a Z28, it would be a steal.....

Car: '87 t-top, '88 'vert
all the verts have the "3" designation in the VIN. I don't know if GM assigned the VIN's after the conversions, or before, or what. But they were all built as T-Top cars to start, since they were built a bit stiffer to begin with. As to model, check your RPO codes. If you have the RPO "Z28", then you have an IROC. They discontinued the base Z-28 in 88, so if you have "Z28" RPO, it can ONLY be an IROC. If you don't, you have an RS.

5600 for what you describe is a great deal...... and remember: RS converts are rarer than IROC verts.... so it will only appreciate in value!

Charlie - I noticed that your '88 convertable doesn't have the little plastic pieces that carry the plastic trim running along the top of the rear quarter panels onto the doors. I know the '87 convertables had them and my '88 also has them. I am wondering if your car was built later in the year during '88. Mine was built in Febuary of '88. This may have been a trim change that occured during the '88 production year. I kind of wish my car didn't have them either as they have been a pain in the butt to keep from breaking off.

In response to the original topic, if the the car is mechanically in good shape it sounds like a good deal.

Chuck

Mine was made in May of '88, don't know if that helps you any. Might try searching the Reader's Rides and search for year: 1988 and style: convertible. There are quite a few! Might help you find an answer!

Well guys she's mine. I got her for $5150. Drives and rides great. I'm very excited. This will be a great weekend car. Maybe a criuse to the ice cream place every now and then. I'm planning on dressing up the interoir a bit. White face gauges, Grant steering wheel, CD player, etc. The Motor (305) is ANEMIC, but with only 57,000 miles I'll probably leave it alone for now. Anyway just an update. Thanks for the advice.

92 t/a convertible is probably worth 6000 - 7000 depending on the condition

We have a 91 TA that we paid 2500 for but had to be fixed it is gorgeous now.

5150! I gt an album that says that

Good deal! Of course it's anemic...... if you're used to driving a '68 with a 383 stroker

AFAIK, your 'vert only had the 2.73 rear available. That's probably what makes it seem so slow. My T-Top car has the G92 performance axle, but the same 305 as my 'vert. And my T will blow the doors off the 'vert! If you want to feel a big difference, swap out the rear gears for something quicker. My wife prefers to drive the convertible because it does get better gas milage

Congrats on your purchase, the drop top has a fun factor that no other style can top!

What gears are in your T-top? And nothing can beat that drop top on a warm summer day.

G92 rear axle is 3.23, click that link that RicksRedNomad posted that says "tech data" for more info on your ride.... and the "RPO decoder" will decode the numbers in your glove box!

Talk about diversity.....

Looking at an AutoTrader for the Dallas Fort Worth area.

91 Convertible red w/blk "garage kept" $9500 OBO

91 convertible White w/Red leather $4000 OBO

many other 3rd gens in there running from 600 to that 9500.....

Update on the $9500 car.....

Current owner bought it used...has "kept it mostly.in a garage for the last 6 1/2 years...hasn't been ragged to death...only has 150k miles."

Told him that 150k miles is excessive amount for a 92....that my two 88's only have 80k and 110k and 9500 was way too much

Also, he said he repainted the car from grey to red and it is an RS.
