From the factory (ASC), they were manual. I've never seen an automatic top on a 3rd Gen vert.

Cadillacs of the period were power with glass windows, a $10,000 premium as well. 3rd Gens weren't. The electric ones are more cumbersome requiring more pieces and maintenence
They are super nice though. The most trouble with up and down tops resulted from the Cad Allante's hardtop to softtops

Powered Top?

I really don't want a powered top on my car. The manual top goes up and down a lot quicker (albet not as effortlessly) than the powered tops I have seen.

The main reason I would not want a powered top is that I feel that all those added parts are just something else to tear up and I am sure their replacement would not be cheap!

There is something to be said about a powered top... so easy. I'll tell you the other extreme was my wife's '82 MGB. What a friggen' nightmare to take that top down!

On a scale of 1-10 with 10 being "Most difficult" and 1 being "Easiest" I would say my top is a 7.

Hmmm......

I had a 71 and a 73 1/2 MGB..the 73 1/2 was when they switched to that funky big a@@ black bumper on them (safety standards you see....) but STILL had 2 side draft SU carbueretors. The 74's had the black bumper AND one side draft.

Top was Ok to put down..about as easy as my 88 Sport.

Oh, BTW, they quit making MGB's in 1980.....

From this web site
http://www.mgbexperience.com/faq/lbc-guide.html

When did they stop making inexpensive British sports cars?
In 1980, after more than 30 years of Triumphs, MG's, Austin Healey's, and others in America, production was stopped. In the end, the British car makers lost faith. They simply forgot that their contributions to world driving were unique and exceptional. But the tradition can return.

Being GM specific, the 80s Eldo verts are what I'm considering for my next car, those top parts seem to be available at a good price, but the cars are still on the high price range, being the best of the GMs at the time. I was looking one over at $8,000. Seeing the top header latches up close, I have to say, the Firebird/Camaros seem much easier, but I think the Caddy's method must have a virtue, you have some super nice interior you don't want inclement weather getting in on.

power top

My '84 has a power top, motor and gearbox mounted behind fold-down rear seat.....has the button on the dash.....havent messed with it much to see why it doesnt power up or down but everything is in place.....I'm trying to figure out who built this car, and I thought it was ASC, but after reading a few replies, I'm not so sure........anybody have any ideas on how to determine who converted my car???

ASC cars are badged on the drivers door area, either on the door or body, like mine. I think I spotted ASC badging on a Cadillac trunk as well. For the 70s and early 80s I would speculate custom coachbuilders in California, vs. ASC ASC did do conversions specifically for GM as some debated here of course... I was trying to get concrete info from my Caddy book, but it sadly only touches on ASC's contribution in about 4 places.
