What is the 6th digit in your VIN, and what is the 8th digit. That will tell me a lot about your car, and I'll be able to answer some questions about what you have.

Sorry z28racer, but have to agree woith the general consensus here...

I also have an ''88 IROC with 5.7 TPI, BUT the used car dealer I bought it from swapped it out before I got it from them...saw the invoice for the block and had to buy the 5.7 injectors to put in to get it to pass emissions...

Yes it has a 5.7 but only because someone did the swap.

Probably the case with yours....previous owner or owners swapped out the engine and the tranny....

Like cdartz said....give us the 6th and 8th VIN position codes and a lot will be revelaed.

the F in pos 8 is the code for 5.0L TPI RPO code LB9

so it left the factory as a 5.0 TPI...

the 3 in pos 6 doesn't correlate what are the next 2 codes?

In fact give us everyhing EXCEPT the last 6 digits of the VIN

Also, look in your console for a sticker with a bunch of 3 digit codes on it....

Look for LB9 for the 5.0 TPI and I can;t re,member what the rpo is for auto or 5 speed.

Any of you other guys?

Bravo!

It would have to be a custom, new engine... not unheard of. You need to tell us the castings off the block. Hard to tell visually.

You got ripped off, if it has 5.7 liter stickers on it and the VIN says that it's a 5.0 then there's pretty much a 99.9% chance it's a 5.0 unless you have proof on paper that a 5.7 has been swapped in. If the owner told you it came like that factory, then it's 100% guaranteed it's a 5.0

OK, nice chop job on the 7.7 , but in all seriousness he's got a diamond in the rough, in my opinion. The 5.7 is a swap, but it doesn't look far off for a restoration and when it's restored, it will be a nice example of a 3rd gen vert. SFC the crap outta that car if you're going to make any use of that 350 that's in it.

He does have a decent car, he just needs to understand things before he just throws them out there...

I think that he has a 5.0L LB9 like the other ???? cars out there and someone spend $14.99 on the 5.7L stickers and took this guy for a chump and made a killing on him.......(no offense)

Therein lies the beauty and where you start throwing in more money to make it just the way you want it.

The 6th digit being a 3 means it's a true factory convertible by ASC, unlike other cars that that ASC converted. Your title will show this vehicle to be a convertible, unlike other converted cars. This also proves that the car came with a 305 because no VIN "3" cars came with a 350. The F in the 8th position also proves it came with a 305, as it's the code for the LB9 engine, otherwise known as the 305 TPI engine.

Sorry but you don't have a 350. You are the victim of the same old bs sales pitch every guy gives who is selling a small block car. The good news is you have a true factory convertible, which is the most desirable.

Herein lies the problem..... this whole thread was directed at trying to find out
how many 1988 iroc-z convertibles w/ 5.7 tpi 5-spd where made?
Did you try a ? Searching would have netted you the answer that you have recieved so far. None from GM!
People told you that they were not made from the factory and you insulted them and said you had one.
well your wrong cause i own one and i know what it is
These people are here to help each other out. Try not to throw it in thier faces.....especially if they are right and you are WRONG
So....... To answer your question
can any one tell me how many 1988 iroc-z convertibles w/ 5.7 tpi 5-spd where made?
None were produced and sold to the public thru GM. I am sure there were several T-top cars that were bought by private individuals and sent to ASC to be converted which indeed did have the 5.7L in them. There is no way to tell how many were converted privatly, but those cars did not "come" that way (implying that they were from the factory).
I hope this helps

Wouldn't casting numbers let you know if it's a 350 or 305. There's no debating that there are no 350 factory verts. That's just a fact.

Yes, and on many of the 1 piece seal blocks, it even has "305" or "350" cast into the side of the block on the passenger side towards the front, IIRC...

Some even have a big "5.7" or "5.0" cast into the back on the shelf that bolts to the bellhousing for the trans....
Probably the easiest way is to look at the numbers stamped into the shelf in front of the passenger side head either behind the A/C or alternator, depending on the setup. The last numbers are the last 6? numbers of the VIN. If it matches the VIN on the car, your engine is a 305........
If not, you will have to crawl over the engine and look on the drivers side for the casting numbers......

They dont make replacement 5.0 badges

My 88 5speed 3.45 convertible was cleaned up in 2000, and when the paint was done, we ordered the 5.0 badges from GM, and got only 5.7. Reason? They don't make 5.o stickers we were told. The little Engine sticker, the "5.7 liter tuned port injection " badge on the right rear etc...all 5.7 ...no 5.0 available.

The 5.0 (305) badges only say "Tuned Port Injection" only the 5.7 (350) added the number at the beginning.
