Missing parts, where do I find them?

On my '87 IROC 'vert, I have three questions -

When I put the top up, the rear section that 'sits' on the tonneau cover doesn't latch or pull down. There is a greasy screw or bolt jutting out of the bottom of the top that goes through a hole in the tonneau cover. It appears there used to be some kind of latch or motor that is missing. The previous owner said that he 'thinks' there used to be a motor there, and his brother took it out to 'fix it' and now it's gone....
- What am I missing, and where can I get it new or used? Searches on eBay and Hawk's haven't produced any results....

Also, how does that missing motor release the top? I have one button on my center console, it seems to pop the trunk (well, I don't know, I'm waiting for a replacement for my broken trunk/latch pull down...). It is electric? Where is the button if it's not that one?

Lastly, the black plastic 'cover' that runs under the windshield and immediately over the visors is cracked in two. Does anyone know where to get this?

I had NO idea how specific and hard to find some of these parts seem to be. I will post digital pics tomorrow when it's light out, if that helps.

NOTE: the owner just mailed me some documentaion from ASC on the top - don't know if it will help me with this, but if it helps anyone else I could scan it as a .pdf and post it here if people would like me to.

Its a big R-clip/pin, and on the 87s it was a mechanical linkage system attached to a handle in the tonneau that releases the pin you talked about attached to the bottom of bow #5. I've been looking for the cable style for 2 years now, and have only seen 2 on ebay that I just missed out on. The linkage style is even more rare than the cable style, so good luck.

also, how does that missing motor release the top? I have one button on my center console, it seems to pop the trunk (well, I don't know, I'm waiting for a replacement for my broken trunk/latch pull down...). It is electric? Where is the button if it's not that one?
There is no missing motor, at least not on the top assembly. The button on the center console should fire the solenoids behind the sail panels that release the tonneau cover so that you can lift it up. If you slide that button backwards and nothing happens, you need to check your wiring or replace the solenoids. The solenoids pop up on ebay every once in a while. However, you say that you have a broken pulldown assembly and are waiting for a new one, so that might be your problem right there, since there is a sensor that doesnt allow the tonneau to be opened if the trunk is up, because it will hit the decklid.

Lastly, the black plastic 'cover' that runs under the windshield and immediately over the visors is cracked in two. Does anyone know where to get this?
Every vert I've ever seen has that piece cracked, usually right where the visors go through it. I've seen a few on ebay, and a few here, and they were all cracked somewhere. At one point someone was rumored to be making a mold of this piece so that it could be reproduced in cabon fiber or fiberglass, but I haven't heard anything about that in at least 7-8 months. I plan on taking mine off and coating the back with fiberglass resin and a few strips of fiberglass to strengthen it, and then having it covered with leather/vinyl to match the rest of my interior.

Neither did I man, neither did I. I watch ebay, hawksthirdgenparts and a few other places religiously looking for vert specific parts. They are few and far between for a decent part at a semi-reasonable price.

There should be a sticky at the top with a complete schematic of the top and all the parts, but if you have different info, yeah, go ahead and post it up.

Looks like I am going to have quite a time finding this stuff. The good news is that other than the back latch assembly, the top goes up and down just fine, and the cracked piece under the windshield is in one piece (albiet cracked), and if I leave it alone it will be okay for now.

At some point, if I cannot find replacements for either, I will work out making replacements somehow. If anyone is already working on this stuff, please let me know. I would hate to duplicate someone else's efforts if I can avoid it.

Thanks for your help, DJCobol

Actually there is a electric motor for our tops. ASC had problems with the back of the top actually poping out of the rear latch so they came up with a electric motor and a large screw for the back of the top so when you push down on the back of the top like your going to latch it the morot turns on and pulls it down tight. Here is a thread about that with pics.

I think I'm going to buy the set up to convert the car to the manual set up that uses a door handle style release, which I am told almost all of the 'verts had. I think trying to find that ASC motor is going to be a total waste of time...

I have found a handle, cable and that whole cotter pin release setup for sale. What else do I need, just the other style pin to replace the screw thread one I have?

Thanks!

Re: Missing parts, where do I find them?

I don't mean to intrude but I also have a question for anyone that may be able to help me. I'm missing the crossover bar on the convertible top to complete or even have my top redone on the 2seater. Please if I can find what it looks like or buy one. thanks
