The bulb is a 12v 20w halogen with a G4 bi-pin base. Radio Shack model no. is: 272-1177 $1.99. Another web site lists them for .99 each: All types of light bulbs most complete selection and lowest prices guaranteed at BulbsUsa.com

Just be sure that you DO NOT touch the bulb with your fingers when installing. The oil from your fingers will cause a "hot spot" on the bulb and it will burn out quickly. Instead, use a cloth to install the bulb.

I found some 10W 12V landscaping halogen lights at Menards, a home improvement store, that work. The 10W watt bulb would run a little cooler than the 20W. There have been some complaints about melted third brake lights when running too hot a bulb.

Yep. I bought the Napa bulbs. I needed all 5 of them, so it got a little pricey. But since I bought all 5 at the same time, the guy let me have them for $7.50 each.
When I bought my car, the center brake light didn't work at all, so I thought it was a wiring problem ... until I took the cover off and found five blown bulbs. I guess the previous owner didn't replace any of them because they were so expensive.
