Vert Spare Tire Question

I'm new to verts, and this car also came with the 16" rim option, so 2 options I'm not use to having. The spare is one of them inflate a spare, or run flat or something of that nature.

Is this what should be in here? I had to yank so hard to get it thru the trunk opening that my back popped. I havent tryed this yet cause I keep forgetting, (and its raining now) but will the standard cheapo spare from my hardtop fit thru the opening and work? Not have to yank so hard as to hurt myself.

I know I'm

I found out the hard way the can of air that came with it was shot.... Don't know why that would be on a 16 year old car.

Having actually tried this I can answer this question. A regular donut spare will not fit and a standard spare with a real tire will certainly NOT fit!

These cars came with the space saver spare and an aerosol inflater... My inflater is long gone so I carry a small compressor in the trunk to inflate either the tire on the ground if possible or the spare if necessary...

The question that comes to mind is how good could the spare be in a 17 year old vehicle?

Ok, so this is the only spare that will fit, I'll just have to jump on it to get it back in the hole. And have to yank my *** off if I ever have to use it.

And since no can of air, I need to find one of them little cig lighter air pumps this spring when the air matress come out. Check.

Tire looks to be in great shape and never used. I'll spray some silicone on it before I attempt to put it back in its place... or maybe not since my hand my slip off when yanking on it. Hum..

That happend to me last week, but it was not raining. I also have that small spare tire that when you inflate it starts to unfold. I carry 2 cans of fix a flat, but I just recently bought one of those cigarette lighter compressor. It is a pain in the ***. I have been trying to find an adapter to refill the canister with nitrogen, but I got tired of looking and a lot of shop looked at me with the STUPID face.

When I bought my vert the previous owner could not get it back into the hole, After pulling back the carpet, and a few choice words I finally got it back into place... I am not sure why he removed it in the first place, but I do know that with the carpet it was impossible to put back.

Yes. Here's mine. Never been touched in 18 years!
I took the cover off a while ago to see if it was actually there.

I wonder if the can is still available on a Chevy dealer? Mine will either explode some day on it's own or is just plain dead.

Wow, yours has a plastic panel covering it? Mines fabric.

Thats what my tire looks like, but no can-o-air.

Dunno, I'm going to guess steel though because of its weight.

Probably aluminum.
I took mine out once. Never again. I remember specifically getting reamed by a friend when I had a flat and couldnt really deal with the spare... so? I had a phone. Problem solved. Besides, when you get a flat and use the spare... and have a full car (like full of people), what do you do with the flat tire? I never tried but I seriously doubt it will fit anywhere but in the rear seat or on the rear deck. It barely fits in the hatchbacks between the sheetmetal above the gas tank, the glass, and the recess of the rear plastic panel. I cant imagine trying to fit it in a vert. Not happening.

I believe the full tire is suposed to fit in the well behind the tank, if you look at the bottom of the rear trim piece there is a rounded out portion where a tire could sit... Just a thought.

Correct. It does take up that space. When putting in a flat 16" wheel it will sit on the angled part above the tank, in that recess, and up against the rear glass of the car. It BARELY fits... like so close I was praying the hatch would actually close. It touches everything. I cant see how it could possibly fit in a vert, and even if it did go in that spot with all the crossbars and such you'd never get it into that position anyway. I may have to try sometime to see if you can put it anywhere besides the back seat, but I'm thinking not. Maybe on the hood.

You mean you're supposed to inflate those things?! That explains why I blew it the one time I had to use it. This was before cell phones were all over the place. I had a blowout in the rain in the middle of nowhere, had to put the spare on, drove about a mile, and the spare blew out. I walked about a mile in the rain to the gas station to call my girlfriend at the time (whom I had just had a fight with).

Man, that was a crappy day.

Not if that's where my subwoofer currently resides... I never really stopped to think about this. Then again, it's rare that I have more than two people in the car so the back seat is usually empty. Unless you're a contortionist, no normal adult could comfortably sit back there anyway.

Re: Vert Spare Tire Question

I just purchased a 91 vert and after reading all these posts, I went out and checked mine, and I too have the blow-up spare, but no aerosol can? Anyone know where the cans can be purchased? I had YearOne send me a catalog, but its pretty useless for the 91.

Re: Vert Spare Tire Question

It would not surprise me if GM still uses them on some cars, try a dealership.
