2" drop too much with my wheels?

I am picking up a set of 2" hotchkis springs for $20 this week from a friend of mine. I couldn't pass up the deal I'm getting. My only concern is that 2" is too low for my car with the 9" wide wheels? Who else is running these springs with wider wheels? Any problems I should be aware of?

$20 is a pretty good deal.

But I didn't know 2" drop springs for thirdgens were ever available from Hotchkis. They currently only show 1", and that's all I've ever seen from them. So if they ever were available, how old(and possibly worn) must these springs be?

Are you and your friend sure they have a 2" drop?

I suppose they could be 1", I don't think they are currently installed on a car right now. They were part of the "extra parts" with a car his friend bought today.

Dan, actually I screwed up my wheels are 9.5" wide. But the 9" version is the original GM wheel that came on factory production cars. 9.5" wheels are replicas like mine.

Be aware that your stock springs are already sagging after all those years so once you install the lowering springs, don't be surprised if the car sits at the same level or even higher. Seriously. Been there.

Re: 2" drop too much with my wheels?

I have spring tech 2" springs with factory 235/55/16. I rub the tire on the plastic fender all the time. Maybe if I didnt shave the bump stops it wouldnt do that. But then you would have no travel. I have no problems in the rear with an adjustable panhard.

I have some umm.. 1.5" springs that are no longer made(red, forget brand). Never installed. I'm still waiting to get these in.

I guess I'm just gonna have to install them and take it for a drive and see how they are. If i don't like them I'll sell them or something.

That is why I want to go with Air Ride...

Sagging? My 87 & 89 are not sagging, they used decent metal on the Pontiacs at least.

I know for a long time back in the 60's Buick made thier springs from a superior metal over Chevy, Pontiac, Olds & Cadillac, They were spending an extra few cents per spring and GM put a kabosh on it.

Re: 2" drop too much with my wheels?

I am not sure but You might end up with more than 1" drop because the convertibe was slightly heavier than a hard top. I really do not know if they changed the rear springs or not. ONe thing that I found on my Convertible is both the rear springs had the same RPO, I never verified this but I thought that my 87 had different RPO's for each side... So I suspect that they changed the springs for the ASC conversion.

It jsut crossed my mind.
