Re: Rare Color Combo
That is pretty rare! Also, I saw your sig..it says your vert has a 5.7l engine? Was that aftermarket, because I'm pretty sure Z28 verts came with 5.0 Liters only.

Mine is badged "5.7 tuned port injection" on the rear bumper. Looks like it came that way from the factory.

Re: Rare Color Combo
Great color combo, I have seen 4 the last 8 or 10 years that were 91-92. I just got a 92 black on black/grey; not as rare as yours but I think they look best black with just about any interior.

Re: Rare Color Combo
3rd generation Z28 convertibles were only made with the 5.0 liter 305, there was not an option for the 350. You either have a non original engine or a 5.7 emblem. I think there was maybe 1 or 2 made as a order for a big wig at GM, but otherwise not. And lets see some pics. Sounds like a sweet color option.

Re: Rare Color Combo
The car sure looks factory to me, dirt and wear patterns all seem to match...but, I'm certainly not an expert. The car is not a creampuff and has seen some bad repairs.
Fuel tank was out before I got it, you could tell from the filler pipe crinkles it was not a primo job. The body is pretty straight, has repaint all over but thankfully orig color.
Exhaust system is orig and shot. The Leather is fairly restorable I think, No the car won't be a trailer queen at this point, but I think I can do a lot to bring it back to where it should be.
Thought I read on the forum somewhere these cars were sent to ASC from GM with T-Top body and could be either a 305 or 5.7....
will be fun to see what you guys think about this "rare" vert. Pics are coming..still dialing like crazy..had to change the fuel pump (more crinkles) and now my injectors are shot, runnin' on 6 cyl still hauls ***.. She's gotten a little dusty from the first week in Boulder City but still a beauty..
Gotta go get batts for the camera..yeah pics..I'll have to Email to one of you guys, maybe help me post 'em. I ain't good at photobuckets.

Re: Rare Color Combo
I am sure it is a very nice vert. They made alot of black and red exterior verts, but I would agree that the black with red interior is more rare. I tend to think these look nice, they stand out. Someone else will have to verify this with me, but I am very sure the vert Z28 and Irocs only had the 305 and not the 350.

..now about that 5.7 myth or maybe this IS a Brass-Hat car. No matter either way, can't wait to get it running good as it looks.

That looks great! What are the RPOs for that car? That will tell whether its a 350 or 305.

Re: Rare Color Combo
the vin should tell you the engine size. Chilton's helps you decode the vin. I don't have mine handy at the moment otherwise I would tell you. If you do a search, you will find the answer I am sure.

Re: Rare Color Combo
The guy I got it from claims he put over 2K into the space age sony sound system (pops out flashes, stuff (?)dancin on the screen..)..also got a big woofer and 2 big amps in sunk into the trunk..looks like pro installation very neat ..I could shoot a pic..got a stack of receipts and manuals for the stereo. Looks like he did spend a ton. There's a Viper Alarm system too thats cool (more receipts). oh well that stuff's mostly greek to me anyway. I turn it on and go.
What part of the vin tells the engine size..?

Very nice ride!
As for the type of engine it came with from the factory, simply check the VIN's eighth digit. An F is for LB9 5.0L and an 8 is for the L98 5.7L.
Now you know.

Nice looking car. I prefer black as an exterior color and that red interior makes it stand out. Doesnt look like it will take much work to make her look immaculate! Nice buy! And your RPO code sheet is a sticker, about 6 x 4 inches that would be located in your center glove compartment or in the trunk on the left side on the inside of the lockable storage compartment.

Re: Rare Color Combo
It's called the SPID (Service Parts IDentification) label. Be sure the VIN on it matches the one on your ride by the windshield, otherwise it's useless.
As for the engine RPO's, I've listed the two for the TPI engines in my post just above.
If you want to decode all of them, there's a handy RPO decoder on this site.

Re: Rare Color Combo
My 8th digit is F..305 right ? so what's up with the stinkin' badge on the back..this is a mystery..still pretty sure it's a Z28, says so on the title, sides, back and dash..are there any visual diffs on the 5.0/5.7..what kind of a Yayhoo would switch a badge ??..still looks like it came with the car..
no spid code sheet in my console, kinda weird.

Maybe someone swapped a 350? There's probably numbers on the block that are different I'd imagine.

Re: Rare Color Combo
For all we know someone just swapped the badges and left the 305 in, or they swapped the emblem/rear bumper cover from whatever car they scored the engine from. Hopefully you weren't lied to about the engine! I can't tell you how many irocs with v-6s i've seen. So long as whoever did the swap did a thorough one i wouldn't sweat it. Nothing wrong with swapping the badges to reflect what the car has now!

Re: Rare Color Combo
Look in the rear compartment with the lock for your RPO codes that will tell you if it is a Z28 or not. Maybe it was made a clone by previous owner. what about a carfax-costs about $35.00 but that may be able to help you as well.

Re: Rare Color Combo
Your '91 IS a Z28 with an LB9 305 TPI. The F is your VIN proves that. Only the Z28 got the 305 TPI. ANd in the vert that was as big as it gets. No other model that year got that engine. In fact, any TPI engine in any 3rd gen Camaro was either a Z28 or it's IROC-Z varient. You're OK. Badges get swapped all the time. It's as easy as Ebay!
Your ride is a sweet ride. Time to be proud.
PS; the 305 & 350 TPI engines look identical.

Thanks Tony, got the injectors replaced (thank you pic a part) and she's running pretty good. Still gotta chase down maybe a sensor thing, the car wants to stall occasionally at idle.. Feels like a 305 to me but we'll check the block # for fun when I do the oil change..Now about that 5.7 badge
, well if it ain't broke...

Can't find RPO's.. nothing on the driver door 'cept tire /build date and ASC sticker. Trunk has a giant speaker where the compartment used to be..the mystery continues.

I have not tried to get to that build sheet, I have only heard that it was there. I just figure it is attached somehow below the seat cushion. If you had a mirror and a flashlight you could probably see if it is there.

To find out more info on build sheet, go to History/restoration and searh build sheet , there are a number of guys that have found theirs under the driver's seat.

It would be cool to find, but as far as the engine goes, it wold tell you the same as the VIN.

There is no guarantee that you even have one in the car, I previously thought that the cars all had them until I did a search
and realized that is not the case.

Re: Rare Color Combo
I haven't found one in my car. While I'm not going to start taking my car apart, it's still worth keeping an eye out for one . . . if it's there. But I did find two production line trim build sheets. One under each front seat. While not nearly as detailed as a build sheet, it's a fun find.
To get them out, I pulled down the seat springs with one hand and gently sideways slid out the paper with the other hand. Position the seat for the best access possible from the back side. Careful use of a trouble-light helps too.

Looked under my seat, nada just foam and covering. I'm not tearing anything apart.. Too bad because I may be selling this Camaro and it would be great to know the options.
