tonneau release switch the same as hatch release switch in a coupe?
Simple question, I'm thinking they are the same switch, just a different button on them between verts and coupes. If so, how do you take the switch apart to put a new button on it?
I'm pretty sure my release switch is dead, and if they're the same, I'd like to try to swap out the button to a coupe hatch release switch instead of trying to find a convertible switch for sale somewhere and pay out the rear end for it.

If you are talking about the switch between the two power windows switches on the console, simple.
Take the four torx screws out of the console plate right in front of the switch and remove the plate. You have to remove the shifter ball by removing the lock pin in front of the ball first.
Once you have the console plate off, you can simply push the tonneau switch up from below. Probably best to disconnect the connector first as it really does not fit up through the switch hole with the connector on it.
I have been looking at mine since my the switch does not activate the tonneau solenoids. I have power to and out of the switch and the solenoids work when 12v is put to them directly, so must be wiring between the switch relay and the solenoids.

No, I literally mean how to get the button off the switch, as in the little slide that you push to pop the cover. I have some coupe switches and the picture is different on them, I'd like to swap switches out but still have a picture of a tonneau cover on it instead of a coupe hatch.
Re: tonneau release switch the same as hatch release switch in a coupe?
No, he wants to actually swap the little slide button on top, I would say take a coupe one apart (since they are a dime a dozen) and start a thread on how to do it. I am sure some of us other vert owners would like to know. Before you start, is the trunk safety switch operational? that was what was wrong with mine.
Re: tonneau release switch the same as hatch release switch in a coupe?
Crap that might be it. That's the little metal pad under the trunk right? It may be out of adjustment from when I did my custom spoiler, I had the trunk off the car. I'll check, thanks.
Re: tonneau release switch the same as hatch release switch in a coupe?
Just wanting to confirm fitment. Yesterday, I used a '89 Camaro Coupe hatch release switch to replace my broken tonneau cover release switch on my '92 Trans Am Convertible (the tonneau release switch is located on the tonneau cover itself). It works perfectly and fits perfectly. I just removed the coupe hatch icon and left the black switch...
Re: tonneau release switch the same as hatch release switch in a coupe?
All you need to do is pop it off with a thin flat bladed screwdriver. Its attached by 2 plastic prongs that slide into the switch.Ive swapped quite a few tops because the actual switch had broken spring clips

Bruce
Bruce,
What is the condition of your hatch (trunk) pull down unit? There is a white switch attached to an angle steel bracket on the pull down unit that is depressed when the pull down unit reaches the bottom of its stroke. It is a safety to assure that the trunk is closed. Only then will the tonneau switch work to power the tonneau latches. So if your trunk pull down isn't working properly the tonneau release switch won't function. To test it remove the plug from that white switch and use a paperclip to jumper the two connectors. If the tonneau release switch now works you've found the problem.

Old post, but. This one from a C4 vette, w/ pigtail Vs connectors.Wired thru the NSS for the trunk release.
Regarding the post above.Anyone ever try this, relocating the solenoid? From the GM service manual.
