89 Firebird Convertible for PARTS: Questions and Help me take it apart!
I posted this in the S. California section, but figure you guys might have more convertible specific knowledge:
I notice there's a rare '89 Firebird convertible available for parts in SoCal. Anyone need any convertible-specific parts (rear hatch, etc) or ANY other parts off it? Anyone want to get together and help me remove the parts I need (left door + R window glass) and I'll help you out too. It would be really great if you knew what you were doing and had the right tools etc. (I have basic tools, but have never taken a door off.)
Reading more about the convertibles...I realize these were factory authorized ASC conversions. This car has a "Firebird" badge so it's not a Trans Am (see photo) -- but it has the T/A aero molding/ground effects. Was there some strange ground effects option for the convertibles, or did the owner just add it later? Or someone said all of the 1991 convertibles had the ground effects because they added some structural support under it. Was that true in '89? I'm looking to pull the door off the car to put on my 89 hardtop. Are the doors any different between the two?
Re: 89 Firebird Convertible for PARTS: Questions and Help me take it apart!
Doors are the same. The ground effects cover the bracing installed by asc.In 89 pontiacs were dealer shipped to asc for conversion and the 6 th digit in the vin should be a 2.They didn’t “officially”start converting pontiacs till 91.
Re: 89 Firebird Convertible for PARTS: Questions and Help me take it apart!
I pulled the upper side trim panels that hide the convertible conversion, spoiler and HMSL. Yes those are rare parts and I wanted to save them for someone that had one of these rare conversions. What struck me as odd when seeing this car, it is a V6. Why spend all that extra money to convert a V6? I also grabbed the headlight control module, trunk pull-down unit and lever that releases the pin that holds the #5 bow tight to the tonneau. It was a good day at the Pick-a-Part.

WOW! I cant believe someone would scrap that car. Being in Cali I bet it is rust free too.By any chance "lonsal" did you get the third brake light? I have two of the 89 convertibles and would love to have a extra third brake light. Also would be interested in the two upper side trim pieces if you would part with them.
Re: 89 Firebird Convertible for PARTS: Questions and Help me take it apart!
Hi tsmash. Thanks for posting this. I am sure there are quite a few members on here that could use something off of that car. I am one of them, lol. I guess "lonsal" all ready got the rear spoiler, brake light and both quarter side moldings. Do you know if the trunk lid is still on it and what condition it was in? I would be interested in it if its still there.
Also "Lonsal" did you change your mind about the parts you removed( I wanted to save them for someone that had one of these rare conversions)? I actually have two 1989 GTA convertibles and would very much like to buy the parts you have. Either way, if you want to keep them or sell them, could you please let me know? Thank you

Car is at Pick a part in Wilmington. Fenders are $39 each ground effects maybe $15-$25. So on topof cost plus shipping I'd pay another $250 for you time
Re: 89 Firebird Convertible for PARTS: Questions and Help me take it apart!
If I was any where close to that yard I would pull them for you no charge. Someone needs to help him out. Still cant believe that car was junked! Its a shame some a--hole cut a notch in that trunk lid, probably rust free too.

Did you happen to get the little funny shaped seal that goes on the top of the rear quarter where it meets up with the door? It's a small, funny shaped seal held on with 3 screws. I need one BAD for the drivers side. Heres a pic of the one on the passenger side so you can see what I'm referring to....
