I do know that the 1991 Latches are better than the 1989 original latches. I got a 1991 top, and I noticed the latches were improved, they looked about the same but they seemed to be a little better, so I replaced them.
"There was a specific recall/bulletin for '89's due to creating wear spots or holes on the b-pillar area." Now that is one I'd like to see... my 89' is doing this!

Someone I know bought an '89 IROC convertible new. He said sometime around 1990 or so, GM sent him to a local shop to have something adjusted in the mechanism and a new top installed for that reason. It looks like some trim screws were installed by ASC were too long and rubbed on the top when down.
I would have to check ,but yep, that is where mine appear to be. I ended up getting some Iron-on patch material to put over the holes so they did not leak. I have a black Top so it was easy to match.

My 91 also. The drivers side has three, 2 in a similar spot as pictured above and one about 1/2 way in the window line just above where it seals on the window. This one has just started within the last 6 months and is about to poke through. Where did you find the patches? I have a black top also and was going to try and cut some small black canvas circles and glue them down.

I believe I got them at Jo Ann Fabrics, might have been Michaels, but they had a Iron-On patch pretty heavy duty, and the pattern looks about the same. The Black was not exactly black, more of a deep navy Blue, nothing a little black marker did not fix.to make it look better. I took a piece of wood and used that to iron on to get the patch on.

I ironed them on the outside, because I had holes about the size of dimes. Unfortunately I do not have pix right now and it is on a top bunk in my barn, so I would have to move some cars to get it down. Next time I get it down I will try to remember to take a pic and get it to you Charlie
My 88 has similar rub marks they aren’t all the way through so I’m really careful putting the top up and down…. I feel like the wear comes from the top being lowered in and out of the well…. The frame must be pushing the fabric against the well harder in certain spots…
My top is in good shape but it makes me want to replace it since the rest of the car is so nice a level above the top…. But the top is mostly down when I drive it…. I also worry the wear will just re-appear on the new top…
