electric fan mod

i was thinking about my electric fans and was wondering if i took a sheet of aluminum about 4-5 inches long and however long the circumference of the fan is and wrapped it around it if it would direct the air flow more efficiently to the motor and not all around the compartment. i got a 383 and no clearance problems in between the motor and engine but was wondering if it would help at all. sounds like a good idea to me

It sounds like you have a puller fan that is normally mounted (close to the radiator). The hot air that is pulled through by the fan will not really help cool down your motor. The heat is already being drawn away from within the engine via the fluids passing through the radiator rather than externally removed like an aircooled motorcycle engine. Also, that will give less clearance to work in the engine bay.

true but i really dont work on the front of the engine so i dont think it will be a problem. i was just thinkin that if i directed all of the air to the engine itself it would help.

An external oil cooler will really help keep an engine cool. Might be something to consider as well?

a tranny cooler can make the motor run like 5-10 degrees cooler too. depending on its size

Air from the radiator is hot, sending that to the engine isn't what you want--unless it's cold outside. Not to mention air cooling an engine that is meant to be water cooled doesn't work. Ever seen an engine overheat and burn up when it's -30 degrees F--the coolant froze in the radiator.

There may secondary reasons but I think the primary one is because you are removing an additional heat source (additional as in additional to the engine itself) from the radiator cooling system. An automatic transmission develops a lot of heat.

True you can just bypass the trannie cooler in the bottom of the radiator and go straight to the cooler if you don't plan on driving in cold weather. The main reason why they put the cooler with the radiator is to heat up the fluid for winter and stuff. I put 2 inch permacool fans on the back of mine and a 10 inch pusher on the front of cooler it runs nice and cool when I flip the switch. I would recommend wiring them all up seperate so you can run the cooler fan by itself if it gets hot and vice versa.

Also make sure you upper and lower air dams are in place.
