Same old question but Please Help. Fan won't turn on.

Ok, my car is and 86 IROC 305 TPI with a single cooling fan. The fan never comes on even when I turn the AC on. The fan does work and it used to turn on before but now doesn't. The fuse is good. I replaced the fan relay and as far as I know the temp switch is stock. There is a wire that shorted out or something by the fan relay that is now seperated. I posted pics and asked about it in the Electronics forum so I'll try to find the thread and link it. My friends dad took a voltmeter and tested the plug for the fan and didn't get anything.

I would just like some info on where to start on trying to get it to work again.

That wire shown in the link is the fusible link that supplies power to the fans.

Thanks Trickster! :hail: Will the GM Parts Desk know what I'm talking about or should I bring it with me and show them? Man if it said that in that link I'm gonna feel real dumb!

From looking at that picture, you might be able to repair that wire with a splice. It will be a little shorter but it should work. To replace it with a new one will require a new positive battery cable or pay a visit to a junkyard and get one there. Do not solder that wire, use a splice on it if you decide to fix it and disconnect the battery first. I'm sure you know about that step in the procedure but I have to mention it anyway.

Yeah I knew about the battery. To splice it can I just take some wire and connect the two ends of the wire? Or is there something special? Thanks Trickster!

See that black connector in the picture that the other piece goes into? You need to keep that connector in the circuit.

Yes I know. I was just wondering if there was anything special I had to do to splice it. Not very knowledgable at the moment with wiring. Thanks again.

Sorry, no there is nothing special to do to it. I would suggest getting a heat shrinkable splice that will keep moisture out of the splice. If you are not familiar with how they work, just put the splice on and crimp it and then take a soldering iron or hair dryer set on high and heat the plastic coating on the splice and it will shrink down to protect the wiring.
