Runnin' Hot - need advice on fans/thermostats

Hey guys,

1987 Camaro with a transplanted 350/TH350. Right now she has a single electric fan that runs pretty much constantly (the fan temperature "on" is controlled by a screw on a little unit by the fan, I keep it turned all the way down so it goes on the moment the car is started) no idea on the temp of the thermostat.

Anyway, with city driving, she runs about 250 degrees, although a few times I've seen her spike 270 and I had to shut her down to let her cool off. Highway driving she floats around 230ish.

Would you guys suggest a lower thermostat and/or switching up the single fan for a dual fan setup?

You've tried flushing it?

It was drained on a rebuild about 2 1/2 weeks ago. I didn't flush it though...

Air in the cooling system maybe?

Run it with the radiator cap off until the thermostat opens, then recap the radiator and shut it off. Let it cool down then fill with coolant as necessary.

Remeber: Do not shut the car off until capping the radiator. Hot coolant under pressure is no fun.

Worked like a champ, drive to work in rush hour traffic, she never blipped above 230 at her hottest point, usually floated around the 215 mark when driving.

THANKS AGAIN!

230 sounds a bit high. I've a 305 but I still only run 180.

For comparison, I think a stock LG4 305 single fan has a 195 thermostat and the fan switch grounds at 230 or so and shuts off at 205-215. I'm 99% sure that 200-230 is a perfectly acceptable operating temp range for the motors that came in our cars.

Based on the fact that you're running at 180, I'm guessing you have a lower temp thermostat and/or fan switch installed.

230 was the high point. it stays around 210 to 215. that's perfectly acceptable to me over 250 to 270

How did you know when the thermostat opened?
I'm having the same issue as you, and I'd like to see if this helps.

Car: currently thirdgenless!!!
When the t-stat opens, the upper radiator hose gets real hot. Just grab the hose, you'll know!
