New Tranny Cooler=Engine Overheating???

just put a new transmission in the car, and installed an external cooler in front of the radiator behind where the fog lamps would be. This car has a lot done to it to run cool and always has since i worked on it, 160 degree thermostat, aluminum core heavy duty radiator, and dual fans that i wired constant, all last summer the car would get to 180 degrees at the most on a 95 degree day with the A/c cranking, now ever since installing this cooler on it, it now will rise to 205-220 in traffic, once i get out in the open it cools right back down, but in traffic or back roads it gets way too hot, could this be the fact that i cut off more airflow to the radiator mounting this cooler, on top of the a/c condensor? or does my problem lie elsewhere, water pump is flowing i checked that as well, any help would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like you know where the problem is.You restricted airflow into the radiator/condensor at low speeds(your A/C probably doesn't cool as well - possible). The factory uses the airboxes for the foglights for a reason. It would probably be best to move the trans cooler back to the cross brace area to allow for airflow.

Trans Cooler

Hi,

The crossbraces he talks about are the two round metal
rods that crisscross in front of the grill densor or radiator.

Alot of people just wire tie the cooler to these. Cleaner
way would be to fabricate some brackets to mount the cooler
to. I fabricated some small aluminum strap and ran it
vertically and mounted both tranny and engine coolers to
them.
Either way

later

Thats very interesting.
I have a tranny cooler and my car runs cooler! I have it mounted on the bottom right side of the radiator itself.

Its really simple my friend.

If you are runing cool when the car is past 30mph it means that there is inadequate flow of air at idle/low speed (where air does not move as much). So, you just need to move more air.

Get yourself a bigger fan (aftermarket with 2600CFM which is twice as much as our stocker). You will see the difference.
If you don't want to spend money, just relocate the cooler.

When I did my tranny cooler I looked allover for a good spot, because I wanted to get the most air flow possible to it.
I really could not find a good spot, which is really the problem with our car designs. THey are just very poor at cooling. So, either move the cooler somewhere, where you think, it will get more air, or get a bigger fan, or get rid of your AC and take them T-tops off. Now, if you have a hard top than dissregard my last coment.

Now, there are other options. You can always get a small fan and mount it as a pusher infront of cooler itself. That way you depend less on the incoming air, since its being pushed untill you go fast enough where there is enough air for it to cool properly.

yea the car does have t-tops and i don't even use the A/C, so i was gonna try just gettin rid of all the A/C, especially since the condensor looks pretty beat up, thats why i'm thinking as soon as i put a cooler on it it zeroed out air flow through the fins. I'm gonna try that first, if it doesn't work, then i'm gonna possibly buy one of the coolers that has a fan mounted to it, and find a spot in the engine bay for that.

Mounting a cooler to the radiator will not mess with your airflow. You have to think of that condeser. It was the frist thing I removed. Those things get bet up over time, their fins get bent in and ultimatelly it really stops the air flow.

Mounting a little fan on top of the cooler that sits on the radiator will probably be the best. I am runing a tranny cooler without the fan thats mounted on the right bottom side of the radiator and it does not get hot at all.

yea i'm thinkin its that condensor because it was pretty ugly lookin last time i was in there, thats exactly where i mounted my cooler, the bottom of the passenger side of the radiator, and maybe when i mounted it, it crushed some of the fins even more, i'm gonna try taking the condensor out and taking it for a run, if that solves it i'll have to decide whether to put a new condensor in it or remove all of the original a/c components.
