what do most third gens run at? we have been getting some very hot humid weather recently 92+ outside temp. my car runs a little over 220 constantly. i was driving on the expressway with the A/C on. car is not overheating but runs much warmer than what is usually runs at. car runs almost to the line between 220 and 260, but it didnt excede that line. i watched the temp gauge closely. my car doesnt have an airdam. did all camaros come with airdams, i have an RS 305 TBI and my car doesnt have one. did it come like that new or did a prevous owner take it off? car doesnt approach overheating temps and i watch the guage closely. its proabaly normal for the car to run a little higher than normal considering the A/C is being run and the outside temps are quite high. is it safe to run it at these temps as long as it doesnt approach red? i recently replaced upper and lower radiator hoses and i changed the collant.

 

put the airdam back on, it needs to be there (and should be)...

 

i wish i had one where do i get one? as i said the prevous owner removed it, i wouldnt do such a stupid thing. how much do i expect to pay for one?

 

My car didnt have one until about a month ago. It ran about 1/8" before the 220 line at all times no matter what, and when I put the air dam on I noticed no difference in temperature. This is probably due to the fact that my fan is hot wired to be on at all times. You can do this by grounding the green wire that goes into the fan relay, its on a little clip that screws into the firewall above the brake booster. It should have a large black wire, a large red wire, a small black wire, and a small green wire going into it. Dont pull it out of the fan relay, just splice it somehow and ground it to the chassis.

However, I would recomend that you get an air damn. Its not necessarily good for the fan to be on at all times and things should be set up the way they were intended to be. I paid $30 shipped for a brand new GM replacement off ebay. I didnt have bolts, but if you look under there you will see what you need to mount it. Regular old small nuts/bolts/washers that you probably have kicking around the garage anyway. If not you could go to a hardware store and piece together the hardware for less than a couple bucks.

I just did a quick search, you may be able to find something better if you search harder. However if you dont have one I must say its worth it. You will probably scrape it on everything but its pretty resilient.

You should be able to purchase a brand new air dam from the GM dealer for around $25-30+ dollars. Just do it.

Otherwise, the General designed the 3rd gens to operate at about 220 for emmision compliance. You can install a lower activating temp fan switch to help keep it cooler. Do a search... there's a lot of info on this topic.

 

I think you can still get them at the dealership... ~$30..

 

im a firm believer in the 180 t-stat and water wetter, along with the stock air-dam of course, it works VERY well, im using an aprox 35% coolant 65% water mixture, with a bottle of that redline water wetter stuff and a 180 t-stat... today on 295 i was cruising at my usual 70-75mph, with the windows up and AC on and the temp gauge was about a 3/4's of a line before halfway, i thought that was a big surprise lol but when im sitting in traffic in 95 degree weather with 80% humidity (today in NJ) it gets up to the normal 220.... i guess we will see how long these good temps last, anyone else like this stuff?....

 

called a local chevy dealer today. they told me there is a replacement baffel aviable. my car already has a piece that forces air from the two holes in the front of the bumper. is that the airdam, i thought there was something else on my stepfathers '84 z28. he still has his car but its been completely apart for the last few years. he's doing a t56/ TPI engine swap and his car is completely apart so i cant look at it for comparison purposes.

i got an air dam from hawks and took the stat out...100 degree days on the highway and it sits at 160. around town...maybe 190.

 

Help!! I am getting conflicting info about the upper air baffle/air dam in an `88 Iroc. Bruce at Hawksthirdgen tells me it is ok to remove it, removing it will not cause the car to overheat. What is going on? Most everything I have read on this site tells me that the air dam is mandatory for cooling.

 

What do you mean by the "upper" one?
