My cooling fix

86 z 350TPI, 700 tranny, 323 gears. Always ran 220 on highway and hated city driving as would continually get hotter and hotter the longer I sat in traffic. Put in new air dam, new radiator, water pump and played with different thermostats and could not get rid of the problem. Finally went to a Hypertec thermo chip and put in a 165 thermostat. That helped about 10 degrees.
Did some studying and determined that chevy did a lousy design with the 3rd gen F bodies. They don't have a shroud and the small factory electric fan does not pulling enough air.
Spent 200 for a dual fan setup from summit racing that puts out 4400CFM. Had to get a high output alternator to go with it but since putting the setup in I have not seen my guage go over 170/180 on highway or city creeping with the AC on.
Has anyone else had any good luck cooling their ride?

I was really proud of my 3rd gen this summer. My A/C had lost the charge and I finally decided to drop some cash for a new belt and refrigerant. I'm in a small car club and we had a big celebration. (Parade, Dance, Fair, etc.) We lined up and went through the parade. I had the A/C on low, got a 160 stat, and replaced the radiator 1 year ago. It was 70-80 degrees and my car didnt get past 170 the whole time i was idling. Halfway through a second gen behind me overheated and blew the radiator. My bro had to double back and push it off. My car went right through.. burned the tires twice and no problems.

Most 2nd gen had mechanical fans that were pretty good at keeping the temp down at an idle. That guy could have used my setup.

Summit Racing.. Manufactor name is "DERALE" part #DER-16928. I notice that it is now being advertised at 4000 CFM.

Fans don't make a difference on the highway, if you're hitting 220 while moving over 50mph then your radiator isn't getting enough air flow to cool it.

New engine, new radiator, new water pump, new hoses with wire that are not collapsing, new air dam. Live in Florida where normal day temps are 90+. Stock fan with no shroud cut on at 210 degrees and the car always ran about 220 on highway. With new fan and thermostat that cuts fans on at 180 degreesI have not run over 185/190 degrees. All I can say is it worked for me.

fan fix

I run axillary fan & 180 thermostat in order to keep my car from running to hot .But then again I consider 200*to hot. I control it with a switch and relay setup that also comes on at start up if I want. I'm seriously considering a lower temp. switch for the stock fan. I also have engine oil and transmission oil axillary coolers.

Then i recently bought my 1991 camaro...i was told that the car had a problem with heating up in the city. I was hoping it was just the thermostat. But it wasnt. I found out that the fan was only turning on when the a/c was on. I replaced the waterpump, relay switch, and raditor. And it would still heat up so i need up running a switch to control the fan. I actually got the know how from a post on HERE. The post made it really easy to do and i have no problems since. I even drive my camaro to the beach sitting in dead stop and go traffic. I drove the car for almost 13hrs nonstop.....BUILT LIKE A ROCK
