A/C clutch question

Please someone tell me that my A/C clutch is not supposed to be constantly turning on and off! I'm almost certain that they turn on once and turn off whenever you shut the a/c off or the car off.

I've noticed this recently and it probably explains why the semi-constant adding of freon.

Re: A/C clutch question

The compressor will cycle when necessary while either the A/C or defroster are on. Regardless, if you're losing freon it's because you have a leak.

Re: A/C clutch question

It kicks on every few seconds or so with the a/c on. I was certain that it only kicked on one time and that's it but I guess I could be wrong.

It definitly has a leak somewhere but I can't find it. It sounds like the leak is coming from the compressor itself since I find what appears to be residue around the clutch and houses in front that smells like, well, freon. I don't see anything wrong with the hoses so can compressors actually leak through the clutch area?

Re: A/C clutch question

Before you change the compressor try this. If you can get ahold of a refrigerant recovery machine recover and evacuate the system and inject dye into the system. You can get the dye at any auto parts store. Recharge the system with the dye in it and just run the vehicle for about 3 or 4 days. After that check your fittings, connections, and lines to see if any came out. The flourescent dyes will require a black light to see it. Thats about the easiest way other than spraying the system with a soapy solution and looking for bubbles with the system running. And as far as the clutch turning on and off it is supposed to do that about 2-4 times per minute. If it exceeds this, the system probably needs to be recharged.

Did it come from a V8 and do you have the hoses that attach from the compressor to the bottle?
