what's the difference between short and long nose water pumps?
i've never been told nor seen them side by side to know the difference.
if i took a guess it'd be the lenght from the block to the end of the pulley. am i correct?

my 1975 400 would most likelly have a long style water pump..?
i'll be mesuring so as soon as i get an answer i can go order one..

Yes, it's the height from the block to the end of the pulley. Either pump will bolt to any engine, but the pump has to match the accessory mounting setup you're using.

 

Originally the short pumps where for Vettes', they're three inches shorter. The same applies to big blocks, this makes it possible to put a big block in place of your small block and have the fan in the same spot.

Not just Corvettes. They were for every car until 1969, and were still used on trucks and Corvettes for quite a few years after that.

 

Not true my 68 camaro w/327 came with a long pump.

 

The long pumps came into being when the accessories started being mounted to the front of the cylinder heads. The short-pump engines used the outboard style brackets, so the accessories could actually fit behind the leading edge of the heads.
