How cool is too cool?

Hey all. When I changed my intake last year I didn't notice that the boss for the coolant sensor was not drilled. I've been running a temporary solution since then. I'm set to pull the intake off again (for other reasons) and intend to drill and tap the hole. My question is: with the stock setup normal operating temp on the gauge was 105*. The gauge and sensor are from the original V6 setup (Canadian - so, celcius?) - I'm now running a V8.

Since then, the temp has been more like 65*. Am I right to understand that the oil is not being allowed to heat up enough?
Thanks,
Jon

Re: How cool is too cool?

The coolant sensor is in the block, not on the intake. So I'm not sure what your looking at.

Re: How cool is too cool?

Im confused now.

On the passenger side block what sensor is that?

On the intake right next to the thermostat housing what sensor is that?

One is coolant temp sensor and the other is temp gauge sensor?

I have a brand new one for my intake. I plan to replace all sensors so let me know, I figured I'd use the passenger side block sensor for my fan probe...let me know so I dont mix things up.

Where would be the best place for a fan probe?

Sorry if I hijacked, in any way.

Re: How cool is too cool?

Sorry, I've been a bit sloppy here. I'm talking about the fan switch next to the thermostat. The temp gauge never goes past the 1/4 mark (somewhere between the markings for 40* and 105*) because my temporary fan switch set up (the type that uses a probe inserted in between the fins of the rad) kicks the fan on early. With the fan unplugged the temp will climb until it boils over.

I never bothered to address this issue further once I got the fan turning on and off reliably because I knew that I was only going to run that motor for a month and a half.

The question is though, is this a situation that will cause cylinder wear in the long run?
Jon.

Re: How cool is too cool?

i think the intake sensor you are talking about that is reading 65* is the intake air temp sensor.
it measures the temp of the air going into the engine.
together with the MAF, this tells the computer how many oxygen molecules there are in the intake and how much gas to add accordingly.

as for if that is too cool, its hard to say.
get a reading of the temp of water coming out of the block.
it should be a lot higher than 65*
i think your oil should be ok, but if you have doubts, get a lighter weight oil or straight weight oil.

Re: How cool is too cool?

No, this 'Old School'. This car came stock with a carb on it. The sensor is definitely the fan switch. As it turns out, the point is somewhat moot. I had a quick look at the new intake today and there does not appear to be a boss for the sensor.

So, in order for the engine to run any hotter I'll need experiment with different locations in the rad for the probe or perhaps upgrade to a fan switch kit that allows for adjustment.

Re: How cool is too cool?

I H8 WWD. The sensor in the head reads coolant temp in the head and sends a signal to the temp indicator on your dash. The sensor next to the thermostat or in the thermostat housing controls when the fan turns on and off. The fan is connected live. When the fan switch closes it completes the circuit by grounding to the intake.

If you have this set up you don't need the fan probe. That would be for by-passing the stock arrangement. As for location of the probe? Mine is at the top left (driver's) side. That may well be the source of my problem - with hot coolant just come out of the engine coming into the rad there. It might be better to be on the other side of the rad after cooling has taken place.

Re: How cool is too cool?

Okay, so I need a new temp gauge sensor...thank you.

P.S. Realized the wire hanging from my passenger side engine bay is the wire that should be connected to the temp gauge sensor. Probably never reinstalled after the rebuild it had.

EDIT: I have this kit from Summit

http://store.summitracing.com/partde...5&autoview=sku

This will allow me to just install the probe (thread in) right where the old switch was. Thanks for the info. My fan throws 2300cfm..I dont think Ill be overheating anytime soon.
