is stock enough?

I have an 87 gta minus engine... I got a hold of a 76 350 thats been bored .60 over. plans are to carb it. I have the factory radiator and the fatory dual electric fans. I've been told that theres NO way that the stock cooling system is going to keep the engine cool. I was thinking of opening up the rear vents on the 4 vent hood to let some heat out.
Is it true that the stock radiator and fans won't be enough?

Re: is stock enough?

i would personally sell the dual fans and buy one mechanical one so it's always on but the thing is it will drain like 5 HP from your engine but if you got a mechanical one i don't see why it wont

Re: is stock enough?

As long as the stock radiator and fans are in good condition I don't see why it wouldn't keep cool. Why do you think it's going to get so hot?

Re: is stock enough?

Just an observation: I swapped in dual electrics (which both turn on with head temp and/or AC) in my 350/330 and I've never experienced overheating--in fact, the engine runs cooler now than it did with the old 305.

Re: is stock enough?

Stock is a relative term.
Is it a stock 2 core alumium or stock 3 core copper/brass?

I run a 3 core and a stock single electirc fan and a 12'' pusher fan on my z28 and it is more than enough in stop and go traffic. But I made a custom fan shrowd that mates the stock fan to the radiator. You know how there is about a 1.5 inch gap between the fan to the radiator in the factory set up, my car does not have that.

Stock dual electric will work fine. Many of us run 350s or bigger with it. You many want to use a different fan switch to turn on the second fan sooner.

Re: is stock enough?

You can do that but it will take forever for your engine to get warm. It'll also be hard on your fans, charging system, starting system. I'd recommend getting a fan control system, whether its stock or otherwise. I went with a Dakota Digital PAC-2000 setup.
